Reading _Dilexi te_ piecemeal throughout the day as I attempt to finishing prepping my grad seminar. I am captivated by the Marian framing & the clear depiction of the preferential option using Rev 3:8-9 in the opening paragraph. The reflections on the "cry of the poor" are also great. More soon!

A "Pre-Eminent" Moral Issue?! According to Bishop Seitz, the pope made clear that he wants the Catholic bishops and the church in the United States “to be united” on this crucially important issue [of migration], which is “a matter of human dignity.”

Oh — new reporting on Pope Leo from El Paso Matters, citing footage they have of yesterday's meeting.

Sounds like the pope was even *more* forceful in urging U.S. bishops to speak out about immigration than first reported.

I mean, that's…not subtle. elpasomatters.org/2025/10/08/e...
“I was struck at the beginning (of the video), it talks about the feeling of powerlessness, which I think is so much. I think it’s so important that we as a church give a message of hope in the midst of these horrible struggles, what’s going on in so many cities in the United States right now. At least the church cannot be silent,” the pope told the El Pasoans, according to a video of the meeting provided to El Paso Matters by Hope Border Institute.

Seitz responded: “You’ve spoken very strongly. We’re trying to do the same in our country and yet not get into the political fray the best that we can.”

Pope Leo told Seitz that he’d like to see the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops become more vocal on immigration issues.

“I mean, even within the conference, there are challenges. That’s one place they should be … I wish they were stronger in their own voice,” Leo said, adding that Archbishop Timothy Broglio, the president of the conference, should speak out more on immigration.

“There’s been some good movement in that sense, but I certainly intend to continue to encourage” U.S. bishops to address immigration, Leo said.

In addition to the article, reported by the stalwart Rhina Guidos for @ncronline.bsky.social, check out the image of Juan Diego unveiling Our Lady of Guadalupe; it is paradigmatic of the political theology of Juan Diego I outline in Ch 1 of _The Aesthetics of Solidarity_.
DC archbishop, sisters denounce assault of migrants at hands of US government
"We are witnessing a comprehensive governmental assault designed to produce fear and terror among millions of men and women," Washington Cardinal Robert McElroy said in a Sept. 28 homily.

I watched SB XXXII by myself because my parents thought the Broncos did better when I watched alone. But they won so clearly my folks were right to relegate me to the rec room TV.

I hope that CIS's return to West will once again prove grounds for flourishing interest, commitment, and solidarity to those who are from different backgrounds & cultures. Signed, your class of 2000 Senior Internationalist (the CIS version of a valedictorian)

At the same time, the return to West is kind of a big deal. So much of what made my experience at CIS worthwhile was the encounter with cultural, economic, religious, & political differences fostered by the dynamic of a large, urban HS. One, as always, rooted in a distinctive chicanismo (4/?)

In our current educational environment, decreased interest and enrollment strikes me as a symptom of an illness in our body politic--drawing our interests too narrowly, limiting our curiosity in the world and even in those in our own community. (3/?)

For me, the expansion of CIS to DCIS at Baker represented an expanding interest not only in international studies but of interest is art, literature, culture, society, and in cultivating a robust common life among the students who enrolled in the expanded program. (2/?)

Denver Public Schools politics: As a proud alumna of West & the Center for International Studies, the news of the program's move back to West from Baker is bittersweet. I am glad that the next generation of students will contribute to West. But I lament the DCIS Baker closure (1/?)

Reposting @jackjenkins.me link as there is some good convo and reposting comments coming from it. @alejacorazonhm.bsky.social’s piece is by far the best one I’ve seen on the event thus far.

The story of Guadalupe and Juan Diego is its own force; I just believe it and tell it with conviction. Thank you for watching and for your solidarity with migrants during this time of fear and devastation in our communities.

I will add a brief note that it was surreal watching the campus police screen the bag of every person who entered the auditorium, the first time measures like this have been taken during my many years on the public speaking circuit. I suspect it won’t be the last.
