This is a key point. There would be no practical effect of passing the legislation because it’d run right into the veto and they’d never be able to override. They’re being pressured not to pass it simply so the President can show he has the GOP in his pocket, and even for that they’re caving.

The attack on Jerome Powell isn't (just) about the Fed. It's the blueprint.

I'm not calling Trump's impeachment, because I don't want to give him a win.

What Trump did in Venezuela was immoral, unconstitutional, and stupid. But the Democratic responses I've seen today show we still don't understand autocracy. Wishing for Congress to somehow stop him, calling for fights we can't win—it's performance over strategy.

We still don’t get what we’re up against
Last night showed the moral bankruptcy of the Trump Administration. Today showed how unready Democrats are to do anything about it.

Trump's actions on Venezuela are impeachable. But impeachment would likely hand him another victory.
January 3, 2026 at 8:37 PM
NYT op-ed on Venezuela is right, but so obviously right that it's depressing these have to be written as "opinion":
- Wars have to be approved by Congress or they're illegal
- Regime change doesn't work out. You get chaos, not stability.
- False pretenses=bad. Iraq->no WMD. Venezeula->no fentanyl.

I’m seeing talk about:

- prosecution
- hearings
- impeachment
- “standing up” (what does that entail?)

But not enough about elections.

We do what we can now, but recognize this insanity doesn’t stop until we decisively knock MAGA out of the White House.
January 3, 2026 at 3:44 PM
What’s so insane is how casual it is. Before Iraq: sessions at the UN and hearings in Congress and public debate and protest. It was the main thing people were talking about. This has been one story out of dozens for a few weeks. We spent the two days before talking about the mayor of New York.

How, how, how is the avalanche of mispronunciation of "Mamdani" possible? (The unintentional times, anyway.) Three syllables, 7 letters (incl. two repeats), no accents or numbers or hieroglyphics thrown in there, and people have been hearing it now for months. And yet: "Mandami, Mandani, Zimdami."
January 3, 2026 at 1:05 AM
This is bad.

May not seem like a big deal, and I get why they did it. But it's harder and harder to trust content. Editorial decisions from reputable outlets should be bedrock - what you see is reality.

How is it that there’s nothing more cherished and American than public schools, but public childcare is considered a scary proposal? I’m not DSA and I care about business and economic growth… and I can’t think of something that’s a better win/win for families and for the economy.

Was surprised by my son's burgeoning political awareness because of his constant hot (if baffling) takes about AOC.

Turns out:

Career success will not exempt Indian Americans from xenophobia; it may make us targets. We should be at the front lines fighting back—because it’s right, because we stand in solidarity with other immigrant communities, and if those aren’t enough, because they’re coming for us too.

I often wonder if the scientists who developed early vaccines, at the moment when they realized how many lives could be saved, could ever imagine that one day people would voluntarily choose not to use them.

Powerful video - thanks, @sanders.senate.gov.

So many misleading headlines about the Supreme Court's ruling on Chicago and troop deployment. They make it sound like the Court definitively rejected deploying troops in Chicago. It didn't.

A few prominent examples.
