Goose Fairs dotted the British calendar. Nottingham’s still survives, but once they filled market greens across the country, where farmers brought flocks for sale and townsfolk feasted on roast goose and ale. #FolkyFriday

With its centuries-old tradition, the Basel Autumn Fair is a living cultural asset of the city of Basel. As the largest amusement fair in Switzerland and one of the largest inner-city fairs in Europe, it delights young and old alike.

#FolkyFriday 🧵
Aerial view of the Basler Herbstmesse, the historic Basel Autumn Fair, taking place in Münsterplatz, Switzerland. Crowds of visitors fill the cobblestone square surrounded by medieval buildings and the red sandstone Basel Minster with its colorful patterned roof tiles. In the foreground, a bright octopus-themed amusement ride spins with vivid colors of blue, yellow, and purple. Nearby stands a large red-and-yellow tented attraction and a traditional swing carousel. Autumn trees with golden leaves add warm tones to the festive scene under a cloudy sky, capturing the mix of history, culture, and celebration that defines this centuries-old Swiss fair.

One evening in the 19th C a farmhand was returning to Penrhyn Isaf, near Penrhyndeudraeth, when he saw 'a brilliant meteor' in the sky, followed by 'a hoop of fire' which landed and two little people got out of it. Then they made a circle on the ground. [1/2

My photo of Penrhyn Isaf, near where an unusual encounter with fairies took place. It is a modest, grey stone building with a slate roof and a slender tree (possibly birch) growing in front of it.

Žemyna, the Lithuanian goddess of the Earth, embodies all living things that grow from her soil. Oaks, lindens, and spruces are sacred to her, and in their highest branches, it is said, the secret of life itself is hidden. #FolkloreThursday #trees #nature
Collage showing three sacred trees linked to the Lithuanian earth goddess Žemyna: the oak, linden, and spruce. Images include mature trees, acorns, linden blossoms, and spruce saplings, symbolising strength, renewal, and the life hidden in their highest branches.

In folklore, candles flickering oddly were said to mean a ghost was nearby. If the flame guttered without draft, it was a spirit answering unspoken questions. #folklorethursday

1883 Bernard Gillam - Gambling with death
A detail from a colour magazine or newspaper illustration. A man in a top hat is smoking a cigar while seated at a table. A skeletal ghost-like figure in white robes is rolling dice from a cup and standing over the man while pointing to the table, which is shaped like a coffin.
