All of this converges to a very unique vibe. A marketplace in an abandoned convention center, housing built from repurposed materials & set up in what was meant to be the luxurious spacing between large buildings. And between Coastview and Dogtown, it feels decidedly less safe than other districts.

After being abandoned, they carved out a piece of Pacifica for themselves and refused to let the Night City government and police, and Netwatch, muscle their way in. Your path in the game intersects with this history, and no, they don't trust you, they don't like you, and they don't want you there.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic had experienced multiple disasters related to the fallout from the 4th Corporate War and climate change. Haitians were forced to abandoned their home and many of them landed in Night City with the promise of work.

Fantastic read, and a great explanation of how the history and demographics of Night City inform its design and aesthetics.

My favorite district in the game is Pacifica, a planned resort town that had its funding pulled at the onset of the Unification War, abandoning a Haitian refugee workforce.

I got to combine two of my biggest nerd obsessions for this piece with @aftermath.site: urbanism and video games.

I was playing Cyberpunk 2077, a car-centric dystopia, and realised how walkable the city is. Then I began to see good urban planning practices all over.

It's disappointing, it feels like a lot of the tech is becoming homogenized. But I won't pretend to know much of anything about how game engines work, and there could very well have been some good reasons why it wasn't sustainable to stick with RED. But I hope they release mod tools like Witcher 3
