Launching from a mountaintop settlement, the pilot uses the prop motor to achieve altitude, then soars down from the summit, motor switched off for stealth.

It’s mysterious how this cactus could exist, as BH-III is mother to no native succulents.
Perhaps a small personal specimen belonging to the vehicle’s long-dead crew.
Judging by the damage, the hull was strafed by aerial weapons during a long range patrol.

The guidance systems for the missile launchers are shot, so the entire missilette stockpile was stripped for its homing hardware and repacked with increased explosive charge.
Heavy smoke-dispersal warheads in the head-mounted launcher can conceal a (slow) withdraw, if needed.

Settlement technicians lack the resources to fully restore the Hawk’s gyrostabilizer, so the mecha is only able crawl using all its limbs to deploy ‘hull-down’ in ambush maneuvers, until expert help can be recruited.

My thought was that the custom helmet wasn’t compatible with the spinal safety systems and the pilots neck was broken , at least to the point that they became paralyzed

But on the other hand this is more of a style over substance piece

Self-defense militia patrol with towed field kitchen.

When the occupying state military withdrew forces off world, it wasn’t cost-effective to take thier petrol-fueled assets with them. (As it was cheaper and faster for them to simply manufacture new ones.)

It appears the ejection sequence failed, killing or disabling the pilot upon activation.

In either case, the pilot’s mercenary unit retreated in a hurry, leaving their stranded companion’s body to be fed upon by scavengers.
