Granville Road, Sheffield 1970 — me on me Honda C50 Cub, flat out in 3rd, holdin’ up the bus behind. Engine groanin’, rain in me face, but I were free. No fare, no fuss — just me and that little bike takin’ on t’hill like it were mine. Never been gladder not to be on the bus - artwork by me

The Death of a Cub
Watercolour and Acrylic on paper
Sheffield, 1971

While working at W.H. Smith Wholesale, I heard the words:
“Hey, Bemrose just crushed your bike!”

My Honda Cub 50—my symbol of independence—lay mangled beneath a reversing truck

A personal story, painted with memory and motor oil.

1975 – Once we’d finished our own “TT” around the bends, we’d pile into the pub, pints in hand, and set about post match discussions. Two-stroke vs four-stroke, who was smooth, who was sketchy. We were young, full of it, and the world was ours for a while. RIP Kenny and Big Steve – never forgotten

I took this in 1974 using a Praktica LLC with Kodachrome 25 iso slide film. We used to gather as a gang on the "Black-a-Moor" bends in Derbyshire, racing against a stop watch on our home made road circuit. Them were t'days!

"Kenny & Sharon, 1972"
Kenny Wright was a fierce rider and a complex soul. We shared bikes, beer, and music. His Kawasaki H2 was a rocket, and he rode like he had nothing to lose. This painting captures Kenny and Sharon in the early '70s—living fast, before the weight of life caught up with him.

There’s a certain strangeness about their faces and voices, I suspect they may be aliens from another galaxy

In all kinds of weather, I made the journey thru Sheffield’s steel works on my trusty Honda C50. It was never a chore; it was an adventure. No GPS or digital maps back then—just the open road, my sense of direction, and the thrill of the ride. - I painted this to remind me of better, simpler days
