I’ve observed plenty of dialogues intended to resolve deep-seated disputes over wildlife, and only rarely have I seen them produce anything but frustration. The National Wolf Conversation was different.

So many respected conservationists have no role in the book! I had to make painful choices.

"De-extinction" is a marketing term, those "dire wolves" are designer dogs, and extinction is still forever.

Grateful to the incomparable @nijhuism.bsky.social (author of BELOVED BEASTS) for moderating the launch event for WARBODY by Joshua Howe (left) and Alexander Lemons (right, borrowing my hat), a new book on the "slow violence" of war and the health issues millions of military veterans face.

Good question. I'll ask!

Can a human represent the interests of wolves? I spoke with ethicist Bill Lynn about his role as a "wolf trustee" in the recent National Wolf Conversation.

New post from Conservation Works, including links to resources and reporting on the ongoing attacks on public lands. Thanks for reading.

“If you are feeling uncertainty, frustration, or loss, you are not alone. These are real and valid emotions that I have been feeling, too.” — Randy Moore, Chief of the U.S. Forest Service, in his Feb. 26 farewell email to employees 🌲

Went for a bike ride on the Potomac River & saw 3 pairs of nesting peregrine falcons & they asked me to spread the word that as soon as their chicks fledge, they will sharpen their beaks & talons, fly to DC & gouge out the eyes of anybody who says wildlife conservation is wasteful

Thought this was a smart, if tragic, point on @nijhuism.bsky.social's newsletter this morning: Obviously firing probationary employees is a blunt, convenient tool, but, for the agency-haters, it also serves the purpose of knee-capping future leaders.

Yes, so true. In January 2017 I read the Claudius books and Dan Jones' book on the Plantagenets—perversely comforting in just the way you describe. The extra pleasure of Wolf Hall is getting to watch Cromwell's and Mantel's brilliant brains at work.
