“If you resign as trustee, please tell people why,”‘said a friend. Here’s my story. #OCDSD should be investigated for governance dysfunction. Antisemitism is unchecked in #Ottawa and society. This is a cautionary tale about school boards and populist extremism.

Kaplan-Myrth: Why I resigned as a trustee from the OCDSB
Antisemitic comments and death threats from outsiders, coupled with an utter lack of support from inside the board, have forced my hand.

Patient came in with sore throat. While waiting for rapid Strep test result we glanced back at the Covid-19 RAT result: positive. Reminder that masking in health care makes sense, if you don’t want everyone in your waiting room to go home sick, your staff to get sick, and physicians to get sick.

Post-op follow-up today, given the bill of good health by my surgeon. However, endometrial (uterine) cancer is the most common of gynecological cancers and many women in my situation wait more than a year for a hysterectomy (less OR time for gyne). More on that next week. Have a peaceful weekend.

News: I was accepted into Harvard’s Global Public Health Leadership Program. (A remote program, while still working here in Canada).

In the context of decreased vaccination rates globally, misinformation, and the loss of science literacy, family docs are needed to lead in public health.

Let’s go!

This is the best 51st birthday, snow gently falling outside this morning, family hanging out together, living the high life in Montreal before the Paul McCartney concert tonight.

We ❤️ Montréal. Here for the weekend to celebrate my 51st, visit haunts from our McGill days (some things have changed in 30 years, and some like Santropol have remained the same). Enjoyed the Musée des Beaux Arts’ Monkman exhibit. Tomorrow, we see Paul McCartney in concert. Carpe diem!

Lest we forget. Thinking on Remembrance Day 2025 about Flanders fields and Canadian veterans, and about all who have died in war, around the world, throughout history.

It is officially winter in Ottawa, Canada. A man in the neighbourhood started making this giant snowman in 2021 in support of front line health care workers (they’d stand outside cheering in the evenings). The tradition continues, rebuilt (from his heart kept in the freezer all summer) for Nov 2025.

The 102 year old grandmother of a close childhood friend died today in Baltimore. I can’t attend the funeral because it is too risky to travel across the border from Canada to the USA. These are friends who took me into their home when I was kicked out. I loved her like a Bubbie. In blessed memory 💔

That’s a wrap! Another successful Covid-19 and flu vaccine Jabapalooza clinic—a pleasure to return to work to ensure that all of our patients from 6 months to 100 years are protected this season. And fun to teach medical students, too.

I return 4 weeks post-op as a physician today, with a Covid-19 and flu vaccine clinic for our patients. Jabapalooza, as a patient named it in 2021, helped to protect more than 20,000 people. We taught medical students how to run vaccine clinics, engaged community, and showed that family med leads.

Excellent report to the Canadian Senate on antisemitism and online extremism. Everything he says captures my experiences of hate and vile harassment from 2020-2025. We need to enforce our legislation and address hate that is produced, distributed, and amplified online.

The Blue Jays tried hard. ⚾️🇨🇦

Any other physicians out there concerned for their physical health? Dismayed by the expectation that these men play through so much pain.

Woohoo!!!! Go Jays!

I just had to file a police report because a man thought he’d harass me by leaving a message at my office saying I’d have deserved to die from uterine cancer because I helped immunize people against COVID-19. The day I return from medical leave I’m running a Covid-19 and flu clinic. Not intimidated.

Pathology result is in: Endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia. Precancerous. High risk of progression. The most common gyne cancer in N America. The definitive treatment is hysterectomy.

So thankful for the medical care I’ve received.

Women, if you bleed post-menopause seek medical attention.

I don’t know what the future holds (not that any of us do, but I’m waiting on pathology results). While I’m a patient instead of a physician, I am enjoying long autumn walks with friends and family and time to feed the chickadees.

Not generally a fan of Doug Ford, but love the ad.

Trump’s tantrums have led many Canadians to boycot American products and refrain from traveling to the US.

Thanking our lucky stars that we have PM Carney to guide Canada through this turbulence.

Elbows up and Shabbat shalom 🇨🇦

Family doctor here: Friendly reminder to get your flu shot. Had mine today!

Making sure our patients are all up to date with their flu shots as well as Covid-19 boosters (family medicine can do this in our clinics, and people without a family doc can go to the pharmacy).
