The execution started just after midnight CST and he was pronounced dead at 12:44 a.m. CST.

Joseph Corcoran, 49, has been executed for killing four men in 1997.

His last words were: “Not really. Let’s get this over with.”

Indiana Capital Chronicle reporter Casey Smith witnessed the execution. Corcoran added her to his witness list and the warden agreed to allow her there.

Happy Statehood Day! Indiana became the 19th state on Dec. 11, 1816.

Interesting fact: The Indiana Territory included all of present-day Illinois, nearly all of Indiana and Wisconsin, the western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and northeastern Minnesota.
