I'm a few chapters into @lkatfield.bsky.social's great new book on MAGA intellectuals and I thought the close of her introductory chapter made a very important point about the dangers of talking about MAGA as it it is an intellectual desert. It's more like a refulgent swamp of shitty, toxic ideas.

BREAKING: A federal court blocked the Trump-Vance administration’s attempt to cut off food assistance for 42 million people during the ongoing government shutdown.

We'll keep fighting to ensure that federal programs serve their lawful purpose: to help, not harm, people and communities.

When doing research for my book, I spoke to mothers who felt ashamed to use SNAP at farmers’ markets, because it’s perceived to be too posh for the poor. But it’s smart budgeting. #SNAP dollars often go further at these markets because of special programs. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/29/o...

Calling it “chemophobia” gets it wrong. It sweeps valid concerns under the rug at a time when we have very solid science showing that many of the pesticides and chemicals in our food and consumer products are not safe. This framing plays right into the hands of the chemical industry. #greensky

Was talking to a friend about Chicago. She was there last year for the DNC. I’m headed there soon. 5 minutes after hanging up, my head exploded 🤯 when I realized that circus happened only LAST year. Not a decade ago, which is how it feels in my bones. 💀Dang, fascism moves quickly.

State & local programs make it easier for food pantries to access fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste. Some ingenuity and hard work at play after devastating federal cuts. #food #foodinsecurity #foodbank

Went home 🇨🇦 recently and got to try new products because of this boycott. Learned that it's okay to buy 🇺🇸 if:
1. It's cheaper and you're low-income (lots of 🇺🇸 stuff is on sale, maybe because they can't sell it).
2. 🇨🇦 doesn't make it. But ya better be sure you NEED it!

I teach this in my food studies classes. SNAP is a powerhouse social program. (Quiz: Guess who lobbies for SNAP? Corporate grocers like WalMart. They reap profits from SNAP spending in their stores and their workforce depends on those benefits because their wages are so low)
1 in 7 Americans relies on SNAP for their food benefits. Not only is it a critical program in promoting food security/health, but it has an outstanding return on investment: for every $1 invested in SNAP, there is $1.54 in economic activity as people go to local grocers. www.cbpp.org/research/foo...

SELF magazine has a great cover story on MAHA. This movement would love nothing more than for women to be back in the kitchen and away from public life. They’re gunning for a world of traditional gender roles for men and women, which they see as “natural”. www.self.com/story/how-th...

Never would have guessed that my book would be relevant because of what's happening on the far right. I was happy to talk to Erica Sloan of @self.com who does a nice job here of tracing the problematic threads of #MAHA. MAHA + MAGA want to send women back to the 19th Century.
The modern American woman has come a long way from the typical early 1900s housewife. About 60% now work outside the home—thanks partly to post-WWII convenience foods. But as #RFK Jr.’s #MAHA agenda stirs fear around ultraprocessed foods, women are pushed back into the kitchen.
