One of the public barbecues with oven in the leisure park Pinhal da Paz. There are public barbecues at almost every picnic spot on São Miguel island - and they're everywhere.

The picture shows a brick and concrete row of seven barbecue areas, a wood-fired oven and, on the far left, a sink with running water. Under each of these eight cooking areas is a compartment filled with dried firewood (usually Japanese cedar) chopped into logs. The ground in front of the barbecues is concreted. Behind them are various trees. In the foreground is a wide path covered with red gravel. There is also a considerably larger barbecue area with a children's playground in this park. Of course, there are also toilets and covered seating areas to protect from sun and occasional sizzle.

The picture shows a natural mole made of black volcanic rock, which is approximately 80 m long and rises 6-8 m above the water at its highest point, depending on the tide. A natural rock access from the shore divides it into two pools, which make up approximately 2/3 and 1/3 of the length. The pools are about 10 metres wide and open to the ocean at each end. In summer, this is a popular spot for swimming, and the pools are ideal for snorkelling, especially at low tide. Behind them lies the deep blue Atlantic Ocean with a few waves. In the foreground is grass growing on top of the cliffs. From there, a staircase leads down to the swimming area, which is not visible in the picture.

The viewer looks down from a height of approximately 850 metres onto the blue Atlantic Ocean and a narrow gorge between mountains covered with Japanese cedar trees. In the foreground on the left and right are green leaves that resemble bay leaves in shape. This tree is the endemic Azores laurel (Laurus azoricus), which was once a major component of the original vegetation of the Azores. Laurus azoricus is one of the few laurel species suitable for human consumption. The aroma is similar to that of the well-known true bay leaf, Laurus nobilis, but less intense. Bay leaf, by the way, is used in almost every savoury dish in Portuguese and Azorean cuisine.

In the picture from left to right: Behind a wooden fence, partly made of old pallets, you can see large leaves sitting individually on stems, which resemble alocasia in shape but will grow to a length of 60-70 cm. These are taro leaves. The taro root is a very popular and widely used starchy vegetable in the Azores. Next to it are the smaller, heart-shaped leaves of sweet potatoes. In the background is a small valley covered with grass and bordered by trees, shrubs and ginger lilies. On the right is a rusty gate welded together from galvanised water pipes. Behind it a young Holstein bull. Male animals of this breed are slaughtered on São Miguel before reaching sexual maturity and are sold as ‘novilho’ in butcher's shops.

The picture shows a small red and white striped beacon on a rocky outcrop. This consists of hexagonal basalt lava and is somewhat reminiscent of a cathedral with its two tall, arched and rather deep caves. The deep blue Atlantic Ocean is somewhat choppy. A wave that is relatively small for this part of the island and the time of year, only about 3-4 metres high, is breaking. The water near the rocky outcrop is foaming white. In one spot, the hexagonal structures are clearly visible due to the white water flowing down.

The picture shows a natural stone-lined water basin nestled in a rock niche, from which a small waterfall emerges. This water is now only about 28°C warm, but is said to have been significantly hotter a few decades ago. Wide steps lead up to the basin on the left. Everything is covered with a brownish coating, which is evidence of the high iron content of the water. The rocks are covered with moss and ferns. The overall picture is reminiscent of a picturesque waterfall on a South Sea island or in Southeast Asia. The local nickname of this place is sp*rm basin, by the way.

The picture shows the blue Atlantic Ocean on the left and a small valley and the end of a gorge on the right, through which a small river flows, ending in a picturesque waterfall. Between them is a rocky ridge completely covered with heather and grasses. The entire valley and gorge are green and covered with bushes, shrubs, trees and, above all, giant reed (Arundo donax), which can also be seen at the bottom of the picture in the foreground. By the way, this material is used to make the reeds for woodwind instruments such as oboes and clarinets. In the Azores, it is planted around pastures and fields to protect against erosion. Like many plants in the Azores, it is very invasive.
