Paintings and thoughts, a record of mild discontent

nice! out of all the surfaces i tried painting on, unprepared cardboard is my favorite
A second layer, greyer, a little bit more refined. But still constructed through brutish opaque layering. I will go for a third layer and try to do some considerate glazing, avoiding an over all single color glaze. #art #painting #oilpainting #portrait #cobtemporaryart
It's funny how an 18"x18" painting is intimidating to me when so many of the ones I enjoy are much larger. it really puts into perspective how much physical effort and paint it takes to pull off such a thing. Most larger paintings I've attempted, I ended up abandoning #art #painting #oilpainting
I find it hard to do multilayer paintings. I just tend to end up repeating the first layer mentality without really elevating the painting out of its former stage. But now I can only paint for shorter peiods of time, so with this one I will try to figure it out

the drinks make you seem human and personable. unusual for a politician.
Trying out cold wax as a medium. I am not one for adding mediums or solvents to my paint. They tend to require more knowledge than I care to learn, and can reach such creative heights that traditional oil paibting has since abandoned (early rennaissance) #art #painting #oilpainting #portrait
So much of the formal aspect of art creation is about generating a spectacle. From dynamic compositional motifs, richcolor placement, level of finish, culturally prescient concepts, and enticing subject matter. Tempting to view and to make. I find to be spectacle boring. #art #painting #oilpainting
Painting without out a goal, absent a focal point. No nod towards goodness or badness, or reverance for a long since dead talent. Just painting to devote myself to the attentiveness of an act and an object. Until my body tells me to go rest

I've always been captured by vessels, containers, bowls, pots, vases, and cups. I think it has to do with their contradictory potential for fullness and emptiness. A meaning ever immanent to the human brain. It's a shame that ellipses are the devil to render for me.

Forgetting, and then remembering, losing touch in a series of touches, reaching and hoping only to struggle against incompetence. All for an image you fail to achieve and to repeat again and again.

Through mundanity I am connected to the world. Unknowable hands, some who suffer and some who don't, passed them to me in a chain with links made of pollution, machinery, and inefficiency. All for me to eat them, compost them, and forget about them.

What do we say through painting? I personally wish to say as little as I can, and feel embarassed when I say too much. It took me 3 layers to paint this mug. 2 painting sessions overconcerned with specificity and fascets until I remember that I am not one for such things. #art #oilpainting #painting
I would say my biggest weakness as a painter is a lack of creativity, or the lack of energy to commit to something creative or challenging. As a result I end up doing a lot of simple self portraits. These two are on either side of a pizza box lid

I wonder what the subjective experience of the obscure, nonacademic, lower class artist was pre 1800. Was it as disconnected as mine? Did they know about "great art" outside of their local church? I feel like history wants us to pretend like they never existed, but I bet they did in multitides. #art
I really enjoy these Manet still lives. There is such a simplicity of subject and compositon that I admire. An unfussed manner of brushwork and directness of color choice that speaks more of a desire to paint rather than to make a spectacle of a painting

A bag of cans and a sketch after holbeins anne of cleves. The sketch was interrupted by arm pain. I could work on it further, but I personally like respecting the efforts of a single period of work. Even if that results in mediocrity.

Two moments of rest, oil on cardboard. These moments are compelling to paint because they represent a person in a natural state of stillness for the time it takes to paint a painting without contriving a pose.

Three onions and two onions. The good part of painting on cardboard is that you can paint on both sides. It saves space, and it creates a sense of relation between the images. Though, that usually isn't the intent for me.

Hi, i like to make low skill unintersting oil paintings on cardboard. Here is one of a salt grinder that i worked on until my shoulder decided to stop lifting my arm.
