The phallus is on the first course of stones, on the east wall of the caldarium. Just above the ground level on your left as you walk into the hot room. It's not alone. There is a little figure on one side, and an 'egg' or oval on the other. Then the next stone has a bird. What does it all mean?

I hope you found the phallus in the caldarium of the bath house? Plus the one over the river at the base of the bridge abutment. It makes you wonder just how many of these guys were dotted around the fort.

RIB 1065. The absolutely stunning tombstone for Regina, 2nd century. Found in 1878, in an area that is today Morrison's carpark, South Shields. On display in Arbeia Roman Fort. Unusual for the last line of the inscription which is in Palmyrene - Regina, the freedwoman of Barates, alas.

Age ties in with theory tree was planted in 19th century by landowner known as β€˜the man who saved Hadrian’s Wall’ Scientists have for the first time confirmed the age of the felled Sycamore Gap tree, adding weight to a theory that it was planted in the late 19th century by a landowner hailed as β€œthe man who saved Hadrian’s Wall”. Apologies for the reflection. This tombstone of a lady with a child and fan has been described as the most elaborate tombstone ever found in Roman Carlisle. Found at Murrell Hill, SW of the city centre in 1878. Now in Tullie House.

Current excavations in the NE quadrant of Vindolanda. Can you see the plastic sheet in the soil,top left? That's to mark the old Paul Bidwell excavation from the 1980s. Amazing how well preserved it is.

Lovely to be back at Vindolanda today. One of my favourite items from the 5th century is this gorgeous copper alloy box lid with triskelion and blue glass inserts. Isn't it stunning!

This is a photo of my last visit to Sycamore Gap. I parked at the carpark at Steel Rigg and walked to the tree and back , as I'd done numerous times before. I will never understand how anyone could destroy something so beautiful.
