the reasons for this are twofold: the first being that when enough rough edges or unique characteristics of a game are sanded off to appeal to a general audience, it can't be the same game. the second (and far more dire consequence) is that larger playerbases are annoying as hell!!!!!!!!!!
there are some games i'm a fan of that i sometimes see other fans lament the relative obscurity it "suffers" from but. i'll be honest, i think the last thing i would want is for Another one of my favorite franchises to forgo all of its uniqueness in an effort to capture a larger audience
