ABC listened when we stopped giving them our money. So will Spotify, if we exert that same economic pressure.

We've seen that they are willing to come together to defend their online platform. Could they be motivated to do the same for their country?

Food for thought.
So, here we have at least a couple million AO3 users in the United States, most of them young, many of them queer, and all of them united by their active imaginations and passion for viewing and creating fanworks.
Even further, online fandom spaces provide opportunities to discuss stories with people who adore them as much as we do. I've never been an especially adept conversationalist, but if I learn I have a fandom in common with the person I'm speaking to, we can both say goodbye to awkward silence.
It lets us place familiar characters in unfamiliar settings, and test how they behave under different conditions. And for queer people, who have been denied equal representation in the media for so long, fanfiction is a way to write stories about characters they relate to without fear of censorship.
It allows us to fantasize about what may have happened in the past to set up the storyline we know and love, and what adventures are yet to come. Or what may have happened if the events of the story itself had different outcomes (Ex: what if the villain won?).
Creative writing, in general, is a means for collective imagination; a mechanism by which we may dream together. But there is something special about how fanfiction accomplishes that goal.
The fanfiction community, at this time, is overwhelmingly liberal. Works of political satire abound on AO3 (Elon Musk/Donald Trump is a very popular pairing this year), and the popularity of queer storylines provides a glimpse into what AO3 means to a lot of LGBTQ+ people.
It's easy to see how "One Piece" and "Andor" fans might be drawn to activism, giving the material of the shows themselves. But when I think of all of the cartoons that I found captivating in my middle and high school years, how many of them were about brave young people taking on tyrants?
The more I dip my toes into real-world activism, the more I wonder how we can harness the profound sense of community that fandom creates. We've seen some instances of fandom organizing already. Young people in Nepal and Indonesia have used the anime "One Piece" as a symbol of social change.
As such, when the OTW posts an announcement on the AO3 homepage saying they need donations, all it takes is a small fraction of those users remembering the joy the archive has brought them and deciding to give just a little bit back. This year, they were able to raise nearly 300,000 dollars.
The fact that the OTW is able to operate solely on the generosity of readers and writers really says something about the profound sense of community fandom creates. I'd wager that almost everyone with an AO3 account has been able to read and/or write at least one fanfic that altered their worldview.
In the half-decade since I posted my first fanfiction on AO3, the OTW has never once fallen short of their goal. Copyright law prevents anybody from profiting off of fanworks (as it should), so AO3 is funded entirely by user donations.
Procrastinator's late-night musings on fandom and social movements:

I visited the fanfiction archive known as AO3 today (like I do every day) and was not surprised that the Organization of Transformative Works demolished their annual donation goal and gained over 7000 members in the process.
We had a HUGE turnout at #NoKingsSaltLakeCity. Cute dogs, bubble machines, and dancing inflatable sharks. Y'know, terrorist stuff.

Thank you to everyone who showed up!
@50501movement.bsky.social I don't normally want my face on thr internet but just this once I'll make an exception. (Weird angle because I wanted my pride sticker visible.) If I ever have a daughter, I'll give her this picture.
My family has six people and we each made one. I can't wait to show them off!
