Noy's 2025 Game Review Thread!

Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
A screenshot of my review for Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. The review says: Rating: 9/10 Played on: 3DS Starting off this year quite strong! This is easily the best Layton game I've played, and it's pretty dang good for an Ace Attorney entry as well. I hadn't heard very many things about this game, but it genuinely feels like such an important entry for both series. Instead of just taking the essence of each game and smashing them together, this game does the best possible thing a crossover can do, enhancing both series with each other's mechanics. Ace Attorney's investigation segments of teleporting around different relevant locations are replaced by Layton's investigation segments of walking around a connected town, finding clues and solving puzzles. Trials are still pretty much the same at their core, but with several fun and interesting twists that don't feel out of place, if anything, feeling like they should be mainstays. Cross-examining multiple witnesses at once is perfect for the series' kooky characters, and I know this comes back in The Great Ace Attorney, which makes me even more excited to play that game. The other interesting twist is the Grand Grimoire, which explains the use of magic spells in a logical, defined way that they are just used as another piece of evidence. It also fixes many issues I have with both home series. For one, the pacing is shockingly good throughout, which is something I have struggled with in both Layton and Ace Attorney. Later Ace Attorney games get so long and drawn out that I often feel bored halfway through the trials, because we keep rehashing the same point we already know. And of the Layton games I've played (the original trilogy), sometimes the puzzles were so confusing that it took me out of the experience and had me stuck for a significant amount of time. This game clocks in around 25-30 hours, which is a great length of time for a mystery game, in my opinion. It's just long enough that you get enthralled by the story, characters, and world, and get to speculate about the mysteries before the grand reveals, but not too long so that you're never bored and just feel like the runtime is being padded. My biggest praise for this game is how it handles the titular Professor Layton. Ironically, he is one of the reasons I don't like the Layton series as much as other mystery games. And don't get me wrong, its not because he's a bad character, or that I don't like him. It's because he's perfect. Too perfect. Layton has practically no flaws. He's insanely intelligent, often solving the game-long mystery before you can get out of the prologue. Anytime he seemingly makes a mistake, its actually just a plan he thought out several weeks ago. (As a side note, this is why I love Unwound Future so much, as it's one of the very rare cases in which you see vulnerabilities in Layton's character.) This isn't a problem in and of itself, he's not annoying about his intelligence, and is very humble and gentlemanly. The problem with it is that he is the character you are playing as. He's an awful audience surrogate. Most of the time, the player follows a supporting character's line of thinking, like Luke, rather than the professor himself, because he's always several steps ahead, and refuses to tell you the answers. In this game, however, Layton is not your protagonist, nor your audience surrogate. Phoenix is. It is evident from the start of the game that Layton outclasses Phoenix in every way. He figures out most mysteries before Phoenix even knows they exist. This makes Phoenix, an already appealing and great character in his home series, even more relatable and fun for the player. He, along with Maya, Luke, the rest of the town, and most importantly, the player, think Layton is a crackhead genius. And this fact makes one of the more impactful scenes later in the game all the sweeter. I won't spoil anything, but let's just say it becomes evident that the word between the two series' names in the title is a deliberate choice. The music is also perfection. Classic Ace Attorney themes are recreated in Layton's style, Layton's theme is just as much of a treat to listen to here as it is in it's home series, even if it is slightly overplayed compared to how it's often reserved for just the most climactic moments of the game. Even the new themes are great, I particularly like the one when you are discussing magic in the trials. I could sing praises for this game for a while, but I think I've made most of my points. There are so many other great touches throughout the experience, like the UI updating throughout the game to more closely resemble Layton or Ace Attorney, or the great animated cutscenes, or the voice acting that I want in every Ace Attorney game now, or even the fact that this is one of the prettiest games on the 3DS that I've played. But I have to end this review sometime. This game is great, and an awesome time for fans of either series.

Finally decided to devote myself to some GOTY front runners this past week; I made it to Chronos for the first time in Hades II yesterday and beat Act I of Clair Obscur this evening. Good ass games, glad they’ve been getting the recognition they deserve

Can’t wait to review Galaxy 1 and 2 Switch ports, 2 especially is real bad. No Banktoad, weird graphical issues, and it even just crashed on me. They really botched these ports, and demanding $70 for them is insane

Wanna feel old? Galaxy 2 is older now than Mario 64 was when Galaxy 2 came out. (2010-1996=14, 2025-2010=15)

This means that a reference to Galaxy 2 in a modern Mario game would be more of a throwback than the Whomp’s Fortress cameo in Throwback Galaxy was when the game came out.

Review coming… eventually, but I am done with Hundred Line. After 50+ hours of searching for anything good in this game, I only grew to hate it more and more. The cult of takumi route finally has broken me, I will not be supporting Kodaka’s future endeavors and regret buying and playing this game.
