I search by "Quaker" because I want to read what other Quakers are saying or doing on here. When I see random people talking about Quakerism I want to give them information, if I can, that'd be helpful. There's so much misinformation about us. You're right that I was very blunt. I shouldn't've been.
Oh! I'm sorry! I completely missed the satire. I've interacted with too many people online who said similar things but were serious. In fact, I 've seen some people use "Nixon was a Quaker" as evidence that religion is bad because even the ones people think of as good religions produce monsters.
Not much of a Quaker, really. He never attended Meeting for Worship, didn't participate in the life of the meeting, was pro war, lied, cheated... If he was a Quaker, he was the worst Quaker in history!
I should clarify that I have met very few Quakers who believe you shouldn't have nice things, but there's a point where you have enough. There's a point where you're comfortable. Then there's this. You need to eat. Cupcakes are a nice indulgence. Cupcakes covered in gold, though? Absolutly not!
Taylor Swift's engagement ring cost $1-5 million. That's enough to feed 550 Americans comfortably for a year. When Quakers say "live simply so others may simply live," this is what we're talking about. An engagement ring isn't worth more than 550 lives Taylor Swift. That's obscene.
No, Quaker schools are category 4 most of the time. This is a problem (in my opinion). Plenty of people in Quaker schools couldn't tell you much about Quakers or Quakerisn.
We pray to God that our buisness meeting will work. Not metaphorically, literally. We have a roll in our buisness meetings just for that. They don't talk, they don't do anything but pray it'll function. Not well, nobody expects that, just function. It's a 3-5 person job.
The only things that make it through Quaker process are the things we feel very strongly about as a body. Which is our system working as intended. I do love how we run things, but it barely works for us. I don't know what you're suggesting.
other committees that support the spiritual and social health of our local congregations. They will report their findings to the next meeting of our Quarter in February. Before even discussing their research and recommendations, we will have to first approve by consensus their report being archived.
Regarding the Quaker model of government: I've pondered the idea that it's an actual, literal miracle we get anything done. It's almost kafkaesque. At the previous Quarterly Meeting of Quakers in my region, we formed a committee to explore reinstating the committee that checks in on and supports the
I'm another Quaker who hates the oat man πŸ‘‹
I'm a Quaker, and I can assure you we're not dodgy. I think our activism record speaks for itself (Underground Railroad, organized the Seneca Falls Convention, recieved Nobel Peace Prize for our humanitarian work in WWII, mentored MLK, organized the March on Washington, etc.). We also have no creeds
Very few Quakers look like this. You're thinking of the Amish.

@hankgreen.bsky.social summed up my thoughts on the government shutdown in the US perfectly
This 17th century Quaker hat sure does look familiar πŸ€”
I think the only real way to judge, unless you want to impose an orthodoxy on a religious group that is mostly antiorthodox, is to define it in terms of participation in the Society.
Is silent worship necessary? More than half of Quakers worldwide only partially practice silent worship, or altogether eschew the practice.

Wearing funny hats? That's not even a significant minority!
I think it's one of the more difficult religions to draw membership lines for. We don't have a creed to easily point at or a firm orthodoxy. Is pacifism a requirement? You'll probably get shunned if you're not at least pascifist questioning, but the Free Quakers and Davisites were pro US Revolution
He can only be considered a Quaker, in fact, if you believe the Birthright System holds any sway in determining your affiliation. You're not a Quaker unless you participate in the Religious *Society* of Friends. He did not.
