Stagnant at $504 per week since 2019, the max benefit fell short of meeting the basic needs of families facing financial hardship for too long. The increase comes at a critical moment, as Republicans in Washington threaten mass firings of public servants in the wake of the government shutdown. (2/3)

Today, New York's maximum unemployment insurance benefit increase takes effect. Hopefully you will never have to use this benefit, but for those who do, the new maximum weekly benefit of $869 will better support unemployed workers struggling to make ends meet. (1/3)
