What happened with the Kurds in Syria is disappointing but unfortunately not surprising. There's been a preference for centralized governments in both Iraq and Syria, particularly from the people that made up both Trump administrations and the lobbyists (foreign and domestic) who've had access.

It's really disappointing one of the more visible Kurdish background politicians in the diaspora is this craven.

Iraq fails to hold its politicians accountable. Nouri al-Maliki had a major role in creating the tensions that the Islamic State exploited. He resigned in disgrace and with pressure from both Iran and US after IS advances.
11 years later, it's very possible he will be prime minister again.
