#Funfact 🦀: The shy face crab gets its name because it literally hides its face. 🫣 It tucks in its legs and folds its large claws over its face, forming a compact, box-like shape for protection when it feels threatened. Which is why it’s also called a box crab!

Great blue herons are common along Belize's coastline, where they patiently hunt fish, crabs, and other small prey. You can identify them by their tall stature, long yellowish bill, blue-gray body, and the black stripe that extends from the eye to the back of the head.

While we're enjoying cooler temperatures this week, cozied up in our sweaters and blankets, have you ever wondered how marine mammals stay perfectly adapted to their chilly aquatic home?

From the New River Lagoon to our coastal mangroves, wetlands sustain lives and strengthen our resilience to climate change. But they face growing threats from clearing & unsustainable development. #WorldWetlandsDay reminds us to protect what protects us.

A healthy sea starts with listening to the people who depend on it, especially our local fishers.

Belize's fishers deserve transparent data, stronger enforcement, and a real voice in fisheries management. 🌊🐟 Show your support to their call: bit.ly/strongfuture...

Oceana was proud to join partners for Little Stewards in Action, engaging 100 students at Holy Family R.C. School in #Hopkins on protecting #Belize’s blue future. The day ended with a community cleanup collecting 60+ bags of waste, proving stewardship starts with our youth.

Mangroves protect Belize’s coast by reducing erosion, buffering storms, storing carbon, and serving as vital fish nurseries. Protecting them safeguards communities like Placencia (pictured here) and the marine life they depend on. 🌱🌊

On December 30, 2017, the Petroleum Operations Maritime Zone Moratorium Act became law.
We call it "the People's Law" for good reason - a reflection of the determined voices of Belizeans who stand for the protection of our waters from offshore oil exploration and drilling.
