🌊 Climate Protection IS Ocean Protection – and vice versa.
As world leaders gather for #COP30 in Belém, Brasil, the Ocean remains critically undervalued. Yet without a healthy ocean, there is no climate solution. 1/4

What is a carbon budget? 🤔

Think of it like a bank account – but for #CO2 emissions. Scientists have calculated how much CO2 we can still emit, or 'spend', before exceeding the Paris Agreement targets.

Why is the Mediterranean a climate hotspot? 🌡️

The numbers:
🔹Carbon budget of the Region exhausted by 2035 at current emission levels ⚠️
🔹Region Warming 20% faster than the global average
🔹Sea Surface Temperature: +1.5°C in just 40 years.

🚨 The #Mediterranean is running out of time. New study from OceanCare the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3) shows the region's carbon budget will be exhausted by 2035 at current emission rates. The region already passed 1.5°C warming.

Are ships slowing down in the NW #Mediterranean whale protection zone? Our new data says no. 🐋⚠️

In 2023, the @imohq.bsky.social (IMO) designated this area as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) with voluntary speed limits of 10-13 knots to protect endangered whales from ship strikes.
