Progress! Blue whale calf numbers are up — 13 instead of the usual 9 or 10 — recorded off W Australia's sw coast.

Obvious lower-than-normal fat reserves were observed in adult whales, which can affect reproduction. Their diet is mostly krill. MT @DrTOMontgomery ✨

Scientists know the animal’s optic glands are responsible for this behavior. If the glands are removed, the octopuses resume eating and live months longer.

But how these glands trigger the animal’s gruesome death has been a mystery.
