In 2004, Parisian police were conducting a training exercise in the french catacombs and found, after moving past a desk and a tape playing audio of snarling dogs, a fully functional movie theater and bar. When they returned 3 days later, the equipment was gone, with a note: “Do not try to find us.”
Members of the force's sports squad, responsible
- among other tasks - for policing the 170 miles of tunnels, caves, galleries and catacombs that underlie large parts of Paris, stumbled on the complex while on a training exercise beneath the Palais de Chaillot, across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower.
After entering the network through a drain next to the Trocadero, the officers came across a tarpaulin marked: Building site, No access.
Behind that, a tunnel held a desk and a closed-circuit TV camera set to automatically record images of anyone passing. The mechanism also triggered a tape of dogs barking, "clearly designed to frighten people off," the spokesman said.
Further along, the tunnel opened into a vast 400 sq metre cave some 18m underground, "like an underground amphitheatre, with terraces cut into the rock and chairs". There the police found a full-sized cinema screen, projection equipment, and tapes of a wide variety of films, including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers. None of the films were banned or even offensive, the spokesman said.
A smaller cave next door had been turned into an informal restaurant and bar. "There were bottles of whisky and other spirits behind a bar, tables and chairs, a pressure-cooker for making couscous," the spokesman said.
"The whole thing ran off a professionally installed electricity system and there were at least three phone lines down there."
Three days later, when the police returned accompanied by experts from the French electricity board to see where the power was coming from, the phone and electricity lines had been cut and a note was lying in the middle of the floor: "Do not," it said, "try to find us."

Beirut, 1970. The interviewer
was Richard Carleton. 2 years later Israel planted a bomb in Kanafani's car, killing him and his 17-year-old niece Lamees

Amazing. Does anyone know what year this was? There’s mention of ‘20 years’, so maybe the late 60s?

The shameful part is that Palestinians were always telling the world what's happening & were always getting killed by Zionists. But those deaths were not enough. It took a full blown genocide for most westerners to come around...and even now some people have the audacity to say "it's complicated"

Leading up to yesterday's play streets, I read comments online where people warned it would lead to traffic chaos, how it was an infringement of drivers' rights or (more imaginatively) a plot to imprison people in their homes.

Meanwhile, here's what those living on the streets in Dublin 7 said...
Some of the comments from Dublin 7 alone, all from different play streets: "We'd a lovely afternoon - great turn out around ...Lots of new faces too. We
started up a WhatsApp group so we can do it all again soon!" We had a great turn out with people coming from other streets too. My kids are
exhausted. But loved it." "all the kids and parents loved the freedom and seeing kids create their own
games!"
"The Plays Streets were a huge success! Loads of kids and parents out." "It was absolutely magic to watch the kids go from shy and quiet to playing chasing on the road! Now we have one under our belts it feels like a much simpler task, just need to keep up the momentum now

This is the dream. Our street took part in the Play Streets initiative and everyone is raring to go again. Anyone approaching in a car was very respectful, and our street is ONLY a rat run for outside traffic each day, it serves no other purpose to non-residents. So, more afternoons of play streets!

I love the Tolka Greenway, and I love that it's a key part of the "Distributed Museum" of Dublin Port. A distributed museum! History in context! History in nature! Hook it to my veins!

Big push on to stop the Central Bank renewing its genocide bonds deal on September 2nd! Come out tomorrow to show the government that we will not accept the continuation of this shameful fundraising for apartheid Israel's genocide of Palestinians. No more, no renewal.

Journalists - call things by their proper names.
Famine has not "struck" Gaza.
Israel has prevented food from entering an area that is under its effective control, resulting in civilian famine - a war crime, a crime against humanity, and an act of genocide.
Either say what you see, or let it be.
