We must move beyond short-term fixes. We must demand a commitment from the Ontario Government to sustainably support this vital sector.

Staff contend with widespread layoffs and precarious contracts. The "marketization of higher education," where education is increasingly valued only for producing short-term workers, neglects critical thinking and broader civic needs.

Students face rising debt, limited access—especially for low-income and first-generation Canadians—and fewer program choices, with 600 programs canceled or suspended in the past year.

For decades, Ontario’s universities have endured chronic underfunding, consistently ranking dead last in Canada in per-student funding. The cost of neglect is borne by students, staff and our communities.

🚨 Emilda Thaveratnam's recent op-ed in @theconversation.com provides valuable context about the founding vision for post-secondary education in Ontario, as well as the serious threats this vital sector is facing.

Students, faculty, and communities can’t afford more cuts.

There is an urgent need to protect Ontario’s future by funding our universities in a meaningful way. It’s time to demand action. ✊

Our universities are in crisis—underfunded, undervalued, and pushed to the breaking point. The ongoing austerity measures are stifling research productivity and innovation, causing direct and indirect job losses, and downgrading Ontario’s competitiveness and reputation.

Without substantial and ongoing funding commitments, Ontario’s position as a world leader in postsecondary education, research, and scholarship will continue to be at jeopardy.

The financial struggles plaguing our postsecondary education sector are not a sudden development, nor are they solely a result of federal changes to international student permit caps.

Join OCUFA, support staff, and students to demand that the Ontario government finally provide sustainable support for our universities. ✊

Today OCUFA was proud to stand in solidarity with @opseusefpo.bsky.social support staff members on strike. This is about more than a fair contract—it’s about the future of public education in Ontario.

OCUFA knows that universities take their institutional governance seriously and work to disseminate leading practices. Nevertheless, improvements are always possible.

(4/5) We need real action. We need the Ford government to step up and properly fund post-secondary education, not with more bureaucracy, but with a serious investment in our students and our universities.

(3/5) This isn't just about one university. It is about a systemic crisis in our public university system. Our government has chronically underfunded these institutions for years, and now they're trying to hide behind red tape and panels.

(2/5) We're still waiting to hear where exactly these cuts will fall. But we're also surprised, because Algoma has been incredibly profitable.

OCUFA President Rob Kristofferson told CBC News this is yet another symptom of the continuing crisis in post-secondary education.

(1/5) OCUFA is deeply concerned about Algoma University's announcement of up to 75 job cuts. It's terrible news for the faculty, staff, and the communities they serve.
An empty picture frame, short white vase with a single green Monsterra leaf and grey mug sit next to a laptop on a black desk or tabletop displaying the Sudbury CBC News article "Algoma University faculty union waiting to hear about job cuts after international enrolment declines." Above on a dark background reads "Whatever happens at Algoma, Kristofferson said it highlights a much larger problem in Ontario about the systemic funding crisis in the post-secondary sector. - Kate Rutherford, CBC News"

Universities will continue to get less but still be expected to do more. Students will pay more but still get less. Stand with us and demand that Ontario do better for the future of our learners and economy.

Even if fully implemented, the Blue Ribbon Panel’s recommendations would still leave our public universities with the lowest provincial funding and near-highest tuition in the country, so they wouldn’t put universities and colleges on a viable, much less sustainable, footing.

OCUFA agrees that much needs to be done to make Ontario’s universities financially sustainable and that the process must start with the provincial government.
