Like ultimately the matchmaking system doesn't matter because more than anything I want a good experience playing Mario Kart with my friends which has not been a struggle point in previous titles

It does feel like a SBMM-adjacent complaint but I feel like it's more about experience design since it's a problem in private rooms more than anything

In public lobbies it manifests itself as "everyone tries to do the shortcut but most people fail because they're inexperienced or get hit"

Idk what suggestion I can make besides a 3 lap mode online queue because at least then you get marginally more practice just playing the game

Maybe add 8 or 12 person queues/item balancing to bring back some interpersonal play?

Idk I just want this game to be more exciting to learn

2) You *have* to lab tech

Unless you time trial, you're probably only playing a track once a play session. In MKW that might mean one lap. And some tricks are incredibly precise yet still "viable." You can't practice tech to get better by just playing the game, you need to grind which is boring!!!!

It's probably two things:

1) It's a party game

Practice/ knowledge is highly rewarded so any time I play there's a huge skill gap in every direction. It makes playing against better players feel impossible and against worse players feels like a curbstomp. Group sessions lack dynamics and feel bad

Mario Kart World is the first game I've ever played/watched where I see a cool movement tech and instead of going "woah that's so cool!!!" my opinion of the game goes down

and that needs to be studied

Currently imagining a world where a video goes viral saying "Xenoblade 3 is an anti-woke game" and far right gamers start playing it

They enjoy it & don't question the major themes but like 4 days later someone posts a pic of Juniper and says "There's a they/them in this game" and hell breaks loose

do I do the hunter's journal to get the last memento or do I not do it because it's boring and grindy

Actually wait that's so real

You're telling me I can replay this game and never touch SoK?

I guess it's extra choice for 2nd playthroughs and speedruns but making the barrier before it so involved feels like it should filter out anyone who isn't going for a completionist playthrough

It feels ideologically conflicted
oliytc.bsky.social
Keeping it vague for spoilers but Silksong has a design choice that just confuses me

It asks players to go full completionist for progression, but then the next step has optional content where the only reward is being able to skip other main content

Who at that point would willingly skip content?

TPHD kind of already does this!!!

I don't think you can use motion controls for sword swings but hero mode flips the world
oliytc.bsky.social
But instead of having any kind of planning around a launch title for their next console, they risked a whole layer of their visual language and turned their OOT reference world into a vaguely allusionary one for most of their players

They had a year to think this through and just said "flip it all"

Twilight Princess devs flipping the entire game render to make Link right-handed for Wii controls is still the funniest game development thing ever

There is *no* world where that was the best solution. Wii Sports had options for both hands, mirroring animations could have worked with a bit of time

I agree (no bias)

to be fair there are just less tools here to build good timelines

I still have all retweets muted on my following timeline because I can't mute individual peoples' retweets

and the discover tab here seems a lot less malleable than other algorithms
