Oregon farmers wrap up local food deliveries after federal cuts

Over the last three years, some low income Oregonians have received boxes of locally grown produce or meat as part of a federally funded program. But the farmers that supply that food are now beginning to wrap up deliveries.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, "provides nutrition assistance to eligible, low-income individuals and households via a monthly benefit on an EBT card, similar to a debit card. The card can be used at authorized retailer stores to purchase food." (USDA)

A federal government shutdown — even a short one — will impact the thousands of federal workers living in Oregon, raising food insecurity and demand for food pantries. However, the doors of our free food assistance sites will remain open, and food is available to those who need it.

We are experiencing a federal government shutdown and are unsure of its duration. Oregon Food Bank services remain open and uninterrupted. As of now, SNAP and WIC are still available. A brief federal government shutdown is unlikely to impact people's ability to use these benefits.
