We're only a couple of years away from the 175th anniversary of when a mill engineer in Honley invited the local press to come and watch him connect his wife's breasts to a 100 horse power steam engine. 🫢

NOVEL APPLICATION OF STEAM-POWER.-Perhaps there is not another establishment in the Huddersfield dis-trict in which steam-power is applied to more purposes than is the case at Messrs. D. Shaw, Son, and Co.'s large works at Honley. The spirit of enterprise with which the worthy head of that firm has been imbued in the applica-tion of steam seems to have been caught by the workmen, as will be seen in the sequel. During the past week, the wife of the engineer has been weaning her sucking child, and the other morning she was suffering severely from the fulness of her breasts; and having no one near to perform the operation of drawing the milk from them, she was doing that business herself by means of a tobacco-pipe. She was almost sick with the operation when her husband came in to his breakfast. On seeing his wife in this state it immediately struck that genius that he could make the tobacco-pipe perform better service than it was now doing: and while the idea was in his mind, forthwith went back to the engine-house, inserted a small tube into the end of the vacuum pipe, and fixed the tobacco-pipe in the end of the tube. He then sent for his wife, who came and sat herself down, put the nipple of her breast into the bowl of the pipe, and had her breasts emptied much sooner and easier than could have been done by the child itselt, or by any other means heretofore made use of for such a pur-pose. We were favoured with an opportunity on Thurs-day morning of seeing the woman's breasts drawn, and could not but feel astonished to see an engine of a hundred horse-power turning a prodigious quantity of machinery, and at the same time drawing a woman's breasts like an infant! Query, could not a similar instrumentality be applied to "cupping," "tapping," and other operations of a like nature? -Correspondent.

Paradoxical Symmetries: A Huddersfield Polytope (2025) 35’ World Premiere

Paradoxical Symmetries: A Huddersfield Polytope – part performance, part installation – attempts to recreate the atmosphere of a Iannis Xenakis Polytope, taking inspiration from the sweeping hyperbolic paraboloid structures of Huddersfield’s Queensgate Market which echo the complex geometries employed by Xenakis in his own architectural projects.

Animations created from 3D laser scans of the Market are transformed into abstract projections that shift and fold across the walls of the Create Lab, alongside a reworking of Xenakis’s Hibiki Hana Ma, created for the Polytope of Osaka in 1970 (the same year that Queensgate Market was built). Using multi-tracking and live mixing, the manipulations of the soundtrack follow similar processes to those applied to the film track (mirroring, stretching, looping), while additional lighting effects create an intense, spatial experience.

The work’s title is taken from Dr Robin Evans’ essay on the Barcelona Pavilion by Mies Van Der Rohe. While Evans alludes to the way architects find symmetry in only one type of geometric configuration, here it reminds us of the multiple complex symmetries across Xenakis’s work in both music and architecture.

Tipping Point explores the accelerating impact of climate change through the metaphor of receding glaciers, using textiles, sound and material processes to reflect on environmental fragility and transformation.

At the heart of this work is a reimagining of structure and support: where traditionally, pins hold fabric layers together, here it is the ice that holds the pins, forming a fragile, mesh-like configuration that slowly disintegrates in an inversion that speaks to the instability of our natural systems. Just as glaciers carry and deposit rock debris over time, layers of ice and embedded pins accumulate in this work, evoking the complexity of a double cloth, woven in two distinct layers that interlace through a shifting warp and weft structure.

This textile reference serves as both a visual and conceptual framework for understanding the complex, interwoven nature of ecological change. Accompanying the installation is a soundscape composed of field recordings from Norway, interwoven with the subtle, intimate sounds of pins and ice. These sonic elements are layered in a manner akin to textile construction – threaded, overlapped, and merged – to create an immersive auditory environment that evokes the sensory experience of climate disruption.

By drawing connections between cloth, ice, and sound, Tipping Point considers the delicate thresholds we now inhabit – where structural bonds weaken, where memory is held in material, and where the slow unravelling of our climate is both felt and heard.

The performance features two traditional grand pianos: one played directly by the artist, the other equipped with a self-playing mechanism triggered by MIDI data. The MIDI data can be generated and varied in real-time via additional keyboards, controllers, and AI agents. The sound of the self-playing piano can be modulated in real-time through preparations of the piano. Extracted MIDI data can also be used to trigger a variety of virtual pianos and piano samples.
