Toga loves Uraraka to the point of dying for her and that breaks me. In my pitches I wanted to focus on a life after the battle where Toga doesn’t die and they can be a high school couple about to take on the world. She pumped her fist and gave a bubbly smile. “I think I’m getting used to your swoops and dives now!” Jirou lifted a hand from her ear, giving him a thumbs up. Just how much of the conversation she’d heard, no one knew. Or if she’d even heard anything at all and thought this was just a check up. “What’ll we do next, boss?” Kaminari asked, singing his words. At least Jirou had an excuse to not understand the situation. It was easy to see by Kaminari’s cheerful grin and how he bounced on his seat that he didn’t understand an iota of what was discussed right now.

It’s made of blue skies and damp dirt, a sharp grin and lavender eyes that Shinsou sees in the mirror every morning. It’s the rough scrape of the binding cloth that Shinsou knows all too well, except wrapped around a potty mouth that Shinsou tried to silence, red-faced, instead of his own hands. It’s the taste of overly sweet coffee that they drunk together once, on a sleepless night, seated on the countertop of the common kitchen. It’s the sound of Shinsou’s character dying on the screen and Monoma’s heckling. The sensation of fingertips brushing when Shinsou insists on swapping controls; a touch that lingers even after he’s pulled away. And now, Shinsou finds, buried under all the pretentious things Monoma’s said to him, warm affection that quietly blooms when Monoma acquiesces and lets him have the red console, laughing, heart pounding, before proceeding to beat him all over again. It’s like a scene from a movie, captured through a different lens.

Togachako is a particularly heart wrenching example of that, and I adore it for as much. Heroes didn’t just use words; she wasn’t going to get into UA with a pretty essay, and she wasn’t going to save Himiko with repeated platitudes that never seemed to make it to her heart. “Why are you the only one who thinks I’m normal, Ochako-chan?” Himiko’s gaze finally met her own as she questioned her desperately, and it was with a similar burst of desperation that she pushed one hand up into that eyesight. “Because they’re wrong,” she stated, firmly, as she placed her wrist in front of her friend’s face. “Your normal means drinking blood, and that’s fine.” Yellow eyes blinked at the blunt statement, before focusing on the outstretched hand in confusion. It took a moment for realization to set in, and those eyes darted to her own frantically searching for confirmation. “Are you.. Are you sure? You won’t run away?” Ochako shook her head, before she pushed her hand forward again, her wrist practically touching Himiko’s lips. “Why would I? It’s your normal, and I accept everything about you.”

It took time for them both to develop the strong feelings we see towards the final chapters, with Ochaco taking the time to understand Toga's mentality and accept her, and Toga getting that feeling that she was not shunned away or seen as a monster in the eyes of someone who devoted their life to being a hero. After a big break from me indulging in My Hero they were actually characters that ignated my interest in the series again. Their relationship and conflict really captivated me and went along with my newly growing fascination with vampires. In the frame is dark pink text on a white background: Uraraka Ochako was raised on stories of magic and princesses, tall tales that instilled everlasting hope in her heart. No matter how tired her parents may have been, they would pull her onto their laps and paint pictures of daring knights and dastardly dragons, describing how fate and destiny would tangle together to bring two people together in a way that was almost unbelievably perfect. Ochako’s favourite story of them all was the red string of fate. The idea of a love so pure that the universe recognized it, and then tied people together in a way so minor yet powerful, took her breath away. It impacted her so much that, even as she grew and came to doubt the magic of the tale, she couldn’t forget it. Hell, maybe she even liked to indulge in believing it sometimes. But, unfortunately for Ochako, the thing about the red string of fate was that it wasn’t visible to others a great deal of the time, which really cast more doubt on the validity of the story. Still, that didn’t mean that she couldn’t take matters into her own hands… right?

That was her name. Himiko had nearly squealed with joy when she found out, the syllables rolling off her tongue like a secret she wanted to keep and share all at once. Ochako. It was a name that sounded as soft as the pink tint of her cheeks, as sweet as her scent, and Himiko couldn’t stop herself from repeating it under her breath, like the sound alone could tether her to this strange, giddy feeling that had taken hold of her. Everything about Ochako made her heart race in a way she didn’t fully understand. It wasn’t just admiration, it wasn't just the thrill of seeing a hero so up close. It was more, something that tugged at her chest and made her want to be closer, to understand every little thing about her. For the first time in a long time, Himiko wasn’t just content with the love and warmth she’d found with the League. She’d wanted something new, something unfamiliar, something that made her feel alive in a way she hadn’t before.
