Every seven years in Alfriston, the ghost of a white dog was said to appear on White Way, thought to be Thomas Chowne's pet.

Chowne was killed by robbers and when his bones were found and moved to St Andrews churchyard, sightings of the ghostly dog ceased.

Oh three men went to market
To sell three loads of rye
They shouted up and they shouted down

I attended a screening of The Nettle Dress this evening at the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne. @overslizzie.bsky.social who has a song featured in the film (she had mentioned it when she performed a musical evening for us at @edgeways.bsky.social) gave a wonderful live set afterwards 💚✨️

Sussex lore St John’s Eve 23/6

‘There stood, close to Broadwater, an old oak-tree that I used to gaze at with a suspicious look from having heard that always on Midsummer Eve, just at midnight, a number of skeletons started up from its roots and joining hands, danced round it till cock-crow’ (1868)
