reading Robin Wall Kimmerer's beautiful writing can be so calming it's almost painful. thinking about that today in this 1st entry in my reading journal, as rain continues to fall & fall & fall in the PNW.

"a flash of Bluebird iridescence"
It's raining and raining and raining where I live. Everywhere that water can find to pool or flow is full. The rivers are swollen. Levees have been breached and sections of highway have collapsed or b...

love a plan that forms because it "feels like an inevitability and probably better than being flipped to the next private equity person"

Today's reason I love my public library:

I'm listening to Flynn Berry's Northern Spy while waiting to pick up a friend whose train is delayed. Downloaded on the @libbyapp.com thanks to Tacoma Public Library!

Post a book you love from the 80s. No explanations, no reviews, just covers.

I finished @harikunzru.bsky.social's Blue Ruin.

Appreciated reading a novel (partially) set during the pandemic shutdown. I want to engage w/more art that directly references that time. There's so much mandatory forgetting in our culture.

Anyone have suggestions of other books?

My best advice is just to stick with it! I remember having similar struggles in The 5th Season, but making it through Book 1 & then having the series blow my mind and heart open in the 2nd & 3rd books in a way that made the formal choices in Book 1 come into context. It's worth it!

Currently reading The 5th Season by N.K. Jemisin but there is something I’m struggling with.

1/3 of the story is written in 2nd person - essentially placing you, the reader, in the story which I find really hard to digest and engage with. Any tips on how to approach this type of reading?

In the prologue to Guinea: Masks, Music, and Minerals, the author describes Guinea as a place where "conspiracy" explains the inexplicable ("A car accident, a plane crash...even bad weather") bc for 26 years the president "eliminated his opponents by declaring them part of conspiracies."

Hard to believe Susanna Clarke's Piranesi came out 5 years ago. Also easy, bc the last 5 years have felt like a century 🫠

I loved this weird, magical, moving book. The rare reading experience where I found myself somewhere totally unexpected. Hope the person receiving this enjoys!

I am this kind of old-fashioned also.
Call me old fashioned, but I like to generate new ideas using my brain.

Running an online used bookshop, I can't keep my fav books in stock all the time. When books sell, they're gone.

I'm always excited when I have my favorites in stock. The Belgariad series is one of my go-to comfort reads. Aunt Pol! Silk! Belgarath! & sure, Garion.
