Wealth inequality in Europe keeps rising. A main reason is that income from wealth is taxed much lighter than wages, creating a tax system that is highly regressive at the top. This means that billionaires across Europe have lower taxes rates than normal working people.
oxfameu.bsky.social
Europe is minting billionaires while millions struggle to make ends meet.

It’s time to rewrite the rules - so everyone pays their fair share.

Join us next Tuesday at the European Parliament to debate this.

If that share had been maintained, EU countries would have had €3.6 trillion more in 2023.

That money could be used for public services like houses, schools and hospitals.
oxfameu.bsky.social
While private wealth has exploded, governments have grown relatively poorer.

In the 1990s, EU governments owned around 10% of total national wealth.

Now it’s just 6%.
oxfameu.bsky.social
Ten EU countries have no inheritance tax.

Only one - Spain - has a net wealth tax.

That means the super-rich often pay a lower effective tax rate than ordinary people.
oxfameu.bsky.social
Today, 8 in 10 euros of EU tax revenue come from ordinary Europeans.

🏦Companies contribute just barely 1 euro in 10.
💎 Wealth taxes? About 40 cents.
oxfameu.bsky.social
This isn’t by accident.

It’s by design.

For decades, EU governments have cut taxes for the richest and for big corporations - while relying more on taxes paid by ordinary people.
oxfameu.bsky.social
In 2025, the EU counted nearly 500 billionaires, 39 more than in 2024.

Altogether, the richest 3,600 Europeans now hold as much wealth as the poorest 181 million – equivalent to the populations of Germany, Italy and Spain combined.

💰 EU billionaires’ wealth surged by €400 billion in just six months — that’s over €2 billion a day.

Meanwhile, ordinary Europeans are paying the price.

Our new report shows how decades of tax policies have favored the super-rich 👇

PRESS RELEASE: Two thirds of climate finance is loans, as rich countries profiteer from climate crisis💰

New research finds poor & climate vulnerable countries are paying back 7 USD for every 5 they receive.

Report by @oxfaminternational.bsky.social @careglobal.bsky.social 👉 oxf.am/climate-fina...
Rich countries are treating the climate crisis as a business opportunity, not a moral obligation. They are lending money to the very people they have historically harmed, trapping vulnerable nations in a cycle of debt. This is a form of crisis profiteering. Quote by Nafkote Dabi, Oxfam International Climate Policy Lead.
