Today is International Overdose Awareness Day💜

It is an opportunity to reflect on the impact of overdose, acknowledge the experiences of loved ones, and increase awareness about harm reduction. At REALab, our research explores Naloxone and the loved ones' experiences.

I’m thrilled to share this preprint with a brilliant co-author team.

We describe several crises mental health science faces in the current sociopolitical context, as well as new and previously-overlooked opportunities to make non-incremental progress.

Pro tip, folks: if you make a figure for a publication, don’t just hand the copyright over to the publisher. Post it on OSF first and then give yourself permission to use it in the first publication and then all future publications. That way, no permissions issues.

The science illiteracy of the anti-vaccine movement has always been overshadowed by its moral bankruptcy and the divisive, polarizing rhetoric that it requires to grift in the wellness industry.

Equally insightful and depressing piece by Ed Kiely (no @bsky.app account?) in the last @lrb.co.uk. The sector is in crisis around the world, true, but the UK HE sector has very particular problems that need very distinct solutions

‘Most of the opprobrium aimed at universities is fantastical. I only wish that academic life was as radical and subversive as its detractors believe.’

Truly impactful work by @abbydunn.bsky.social and @profsamch.bsky.social intergenerational transmission or anxiety at @sussex.ac.uk. Anyone with clinical experience knows how interconnected parents and children's anxiety is, even at subsyndromal levels, and how crucial it is for therapeutic success

Sometimes when I talk to intervention scientists about #measurement #psychometrics I get the argument “even if this questionnaire has bad psychometrics, everyone else in my field uses it and I want to be able to compare my results with theirs”. Let’s talk about how that is a misunderstanding 🧵

I have discussed numerous times with my students (hopefully soon-to-be MH professionals) whether "anxiety" is a "disorder" and it often surprises me how a good number of them consider anxiety "pathological" (am I using too many ""?) instead of a normal reaction to challenges, something to overcome
pablorom.bsky.social
In my opinion (and it might sound controversial; I don't think so), at the bottom of this is a misunderstanding about how we frame things like sadness or anxiety. Some (professionals & lay people) believe those should be "treated", but they are not only normal but NECESSARY developmental experiences
pablorom.bsky.social
This is a very important issue, because it might sound like "trashing" psychological interventions or prevention efforts, but it is not. This is how science should work. We have a good idea, we test it, if it works, great, if it doesn't, rethink and retest. With enough evidence against, we drop it.

I’m in the Guardian today, arguing that we should stop them all-class mental health lessons in schools

I've thought very carefully about ‘going public’ with this, because it's a sensitive argument to make, especially in the face of so many young people struggling.

Mental-health lessons in schools sound like a great idea. The trouble is, they don’t work | Lucy Foulkes
All-class therapy sessions don’t help, and may even make matters worse. The evidence shows we need different solutions, says Dr Lucy Foulkes, an academic psychologist at Oxford University
