Wrote myself up a post on my (often disused) painting and wargaming blog to organize my thoughts and lay our an actionable plan for responsible hobbying in 2025. TLDR: buy less, paint more, play more.

Figuring Out 2025 Plans
So first thing's first - I haven't done any gaming lately. Haven't gotten my army to the game store for Warhammer: The Old World. Kind of.....

Sure thing - sorry about that! I’m usually pretty good about listing the manufacturer in my posts.

Watching that movie definitely played a role in this impulse buy.

These are from The Assault Group!

The entirety of my African rebel army as it currently stands. Maybe one more session of painting and then flocking bases and they’ll be done. I think I have one more guy with a rocket launcher still to assemble and paint as well.
17 28mm modern African soldiers with a variety of automatic rifles, recoilless rifles and even a sniper.

Parachute army guys were some of my favorite toys as a kid.

This is how he keeps escaping those burning windmills and exploding castles.

Thank you! I just used Reaper Miniatures’ “Dark Skin” and “Dark Highlights” paints! Two coats of Dark Skin then highlighting the nose, forehead, cheeks, chin and knuckles with Dark Highlights.

So GW are pulling their legal bullshit with a creator on some immensely spurious grounds.

They are arguing that even not similar models are unfair competition because they're compatible with their games...

Please donate to help the legal fund #nerdlings

As a librarian and archivist, part of my training is in reference. If you do not know, reference is the art and science of teaching students, other researchers, and the public how to actually do their own research.
It makes me livid when my colleagues promote this shit.

Among the reasons I absolutely loathe genAI is the fact it devalues and undermines skills like learning how to research, fact check, and communicate. It’s like answering a question with a print out of search engine results, taking it as truth because the computer said so.

Realized I never posted these here - a squad of modern African militia from The Assault Group (the wood on the guns looks way less yellow in person, I swear). I have another dozen in the works as well.
Five 28mm miniatures depicting African men in green fatigues holding automatic rifles.

A bad paint job is better than no paint at all......
paintingmoreorcs.bsky.social
I had someone argue to me that no paint job they could apply would look better than “the purity of gray plastic.” I took psychic damage from that one.

I’ve only actually been in there once, on a date back in 2009. The bar environment isn’t my jam - too noisy and especially now that I don’t drink alcohol at all. But I’ll buy their sauce until the end of time if I can.

Poppy gets fed on a schedule, and Gina has gotten in the habit of saying “time to eat!” to him at feeding time. She just said it to herself as she warmed up her lunch and Poppy came flying.

So he has enough brain cells for conditioning to work on him.

To all the LGBTQIA+ people in gaming out there: even with all the harassment and hardships, your voices and visibility are making a genuine difference, and hopefully the work won't be on you in the future.

A lot of men are also mentioning how participating in different gaming culture domains have brought them into contact with more sexual and gender minorities and helped them diversify their views. Understanding others' negative experiences in gaming have opened eyes to broader societal injustice too.

The gorilla is quickly shaping up to be my new favorite piece of scatter terrain - 3D printed by a buddy of mine, sprayed with a neon red rattle can I bought by mistake. It went on real gritty for some reason but it is what it is. Base for it arriving tomorrow!
paintingmoreorcs.bsky.social
Progress tonight - I finished two Mantic “Terrain Crate” cars that I started four months ago, glued “going out of business” signs in the windows of TeeVeeShak, and painted the sunglasses and shorts on the inflatable gorilla. I miss seeing these at car dealerships and such.
A green metallic pickup truck and a blue metallic car that has had its front smashed in. 28mm models. 3D printed model building of a “TeeVeeShak” retail outlet. The windows all have “Going Out of Business” signs in them. A 3D printed gorilla, painted neon red, wearing neon green shorts and sunglasses. He’s holding a sign over his head that reads “All Stock Must Go.” He’s intended to be the sort of giant inflatable that businesses like car dealerships used to put on the roof. Sadly, giant novelty inflatable gorillas have been outcompeted by Wacky Waving Arm Inflatable Tube Men, and are now rarely if ever seen in the wild.

98% of his behavior is “feed me, I’m cute.”

Wrapped his tail around his outstretched legs. Poppy’s my first experience with a cat with a tail, and the furry butt-tentacle is still amazing to me.
