Modern design lover and physically disabled gardener. Showcasing our 1964 home, mostly native gardens and how I navigate both with a walker or wheelchair.
The verbena stricta has been blooming since the start of July! It sent up fresh blooms this week after I trimmed a few back so the bees are very happy! #nativeplants #michigannativeplants

How stunning is this native monarda punctata (spotted bee balm). New to the garden last year and I’m in love!

I checked in on our year one native meadow yesterday. The swamp milkweed is starting to bloom! Slender and regular mountain mint as well so we’ll have nectar for any monarch guests.

These beauties doesn’t seem to be bothered by this heat wave! I’ve only watered a few things planted recently. Mostly native and nativar plants but of course the sedum and pincushion flowers, etc. are not.

It’s been a month since I posted a meadow update! Mainly because I can’t physically get down to this low area in our yard too easily. But it seems very happy! Nodding wild onion, blue vervain, slender mountain mint, penstemon, wild bergamot, yarrow and several sedges and wild violets shown here.

Penstemon, slender mountain mint, hoary vervain, little bluestem and more! I added the slender mountain mint last year and it was just what I needed to add some airy layers between some of the more structured plants.

Michigan natives - plains oval sedge and downy wood mint looking lovely in the garden. Although the downy wood mint is thriving more in my backyard where the soil is more lean.

A couple plants I’ve been able to enjoy since a portion of our yard was rabbit-proofed! Woodland phlox and foam flowers! Both of these are cultivars I believe. Maybe “blue moon” and cutting edge.”

Lowland native meadow check-in! Nodding wild onion, blue vervain, penstemon digitalis, switch grass, big bluestem, boneset, mountain mint, various sedges, swamp milkweed, lady fern, blue flag iris , wild bergamot and a few others!

Lots of lush native plants coming up in the part shade garden! This area is almost the right size for me to tend to easily. I still should’ve left myself a kneeling path through the center at its widest point which is 5 ft. Paths are key to gardening with a mobility disability! #nativeplants

I forgot to include the trillium in my white flower post! This one comes up every year but never spreads .

White blooms and buds in the garden! Antennaria howellii / pussytoes, narcissus Thalia/ daffodil, aronia arbutifolia/ red chokeberry, sedum ternatum/ woodland stonecrop. The daffodils are the only non native in this bunch.

It’s been a very cold spring in Michigan. So here’s another old photo from one of the small beds in our yard. Shallow beds and/or pathways make it easier to garden for me ♿️. Knee pads are a must too for all that kneeling and crawling! Butterfly weed and yarrow shown here. #garden #nativeplants

A couple summers ago in the front garden. The totem was one of a few outdoor decor items left by our home’s previous owners. I believe one of them was an artist so it’s fun to have a few things like this.

A look into our formerly sunken living room. The step down was right at the divider. Due to my limited mobility, we had the floor raised to be level. It was quite a project including windows, vents and cabinet height. But I’m so glad we did it! #accessibility #accessiblehome #livingwithdisability

I believe this is panicled aster. It just showed up in our yard and is stunning! This was taken last September after three years of growth. Some consider this native beauty a weed. I urge you not to! The seeds have been feeding the birds all winter 💛.

Verbena stricta and eryngium yuccifolium is my favorite native plant combination and they both bloomed for a very long time. Perfect for my smallish garden. I have them planted with little bluestem grass and slender mountain mint as well. Can you tell we have deer and rabbits? No echinacea 🫤
