Me and a classmate visiting the pyramids in Egypt. We were both high school students at Cairo American College, in the Cairo suburb Maadi, at the time. I graduated from there the following June.

One of my favorite moments in the original Star Trek is at the beginning of “Mirrior, Mirror,” when Kirk is negotiating with the pacifist Halkan council for their dilithium crystals.

Councillor: “Captain, you do have the might to force the crystals from us.”

Kirk: “But we won’t. Consider that.”🖖🏻

Here’s the beginning of a beautiful piece for guitar, “Desde el Alma” by Eduardo Diaz.

Thousands of members of the Canadian Armed Forces are spending Christmas away from home – standing on guard for our freedoms, and those of our allies.

In this increasingly dangerous and divided world, we are ever more grateful for your service and sacrifice. Merry Christmas.

It’s a cold, snowy day here in Alberta. Windchill in the -30s C. 🥶. Yesterday I was out for two hours snow blowing the driveway, but overnight drifting snow filled parts of it back in! Will have to do it again in a couple of days.

A good old fashioned Canadian winter!

I greatly enjoyed listening to this guitar recital by Carles Trepat. So relaxing; neither loud, nor super fast, nor strident. Just quiet, immensely satisfying virtuosity from a sensitive, expressive musician.

The 3rd movement of “La Catedral” by Augustin Barrios Mangore is often played way too fast (in my opinion) by classical guitarists, as if it’s a race. Yet, it is marked “Allegro Solemne.”

This performance by Tariq Harb reveals subtleties in the piece that I feel faster tempos tend to obscure.

A 1943 zinc-coated steel penny made to save copper during WW2. Worth a few dollars today, from what I could find out. A nice piece of history.

Regarding classical guitar right hand technique, any problems I’ve had with pimami arpeggios and the pami tremolo, especially at higher tempos, results from tension in the right little finger. This tension inhibits the easy return of the “a” finger to the string for another cycle.

This is one of the best performances of Francisco Tarrega’s “Estudio Brilliante” I’ve ever heard, played by one of my favorite guitarists, Irina Kulikova. This is a very difficult piece, but she plays it flawlessly. Enjoy!
