Off my hiatus to say this:
MAGA doesn’t actually embrace you if you’re not white or not Christian. It tolerates you, quietly, conditionally, and only when you serve its purpose. You're a tool to attack diversity, not be it. The moment you speak up, the mask slips.

I didn’t have cable growing up, I had PBS. It taught me to dream, to feel, to believe I mattered. For kids like me, it wasn’t just TV, it was a lifeline.

Cutting PBS cuts off wonder, empathy, and possibility. We can’t afford that.

I am the first to go to college and first to work not in manual labor. Sometimes, access to education and its impact is generational work. We may not see the effects, but by fostering opportunities, families can go from laborers to educators. Someday, the dream they're family sought will happen. 2/2

I wanted to share some of my family history. Like many, I am the product of immigrants. My Great, Great Grandparents came from Italy the 1880s. Neither of them could read or write. 1/2

It's in the data, education = one of strongest predictors of employment, higher median salaries, AND access to necessary benefits such as healthcare and retirement. When you gut the education system, put up barriers to higher education attainment like defunding TRIO, you're affecting so much more.

And such unemployment is consistent with multiyear data. Those with more education are more likely to earn more and be employed. The blip = Covid. Those with degrees were more likely to maintain employment during that time.

Let's say we're generous and say those below a BA make $46k a year. Pay attention to the other end of the chart in the grey. Those with less education tend to have higher unemployment rates.
May 22, 2025 at 6:22 PM
Median weekly earnings for those with less than a BA degree is less than $750. A total gross take home (not counting taxes and deductions) per paycheck of $1,500. Totals to a gross annual amount of around $35,000. Factor in all expenses, most in this range are either at or around the poverty line.

I assure you that the impact that defunding the Dept. of Education would have on our society would be massive. Let's look at some charts 1/3

Essentially- Mississippi had roughly 9-10% of their students held back a grade because of low testing. the 4th grade reading "miracle" actually shows a 9-10% deficiency, far behind the national average.
May 21, 2025 at 4:07 PM
The fallacy of the Miss. Miracle is that is does not include struggling test scores in their numbers. All things look like miracles when we exclude the things that dispute or challenge the outcomes.

In Louisiana after the creation of GATOR vouchers, On average, voucher students at private schools fare worse on state tests than their public-school peers. Particularly limited income students get left behind with school choice vouchers.

Rep. Frankel: The federal government's role in education is to provide valuable oversight and ensure access to educational opportunities.
May 21, 2025 at 3:19 PM
Rep. Bice calling the Dept. of Education's mission a failure without acknowledging that it's failing due to heavy cuts in favor of school choice and a lack of keeping up with cost of living needs for public school educators as a cause is infuriating.
May 21, 2025 at 3:03 PM
School choice is just another way to say "we want to privatize education." School choice is only a choice for people who already have resources.

The Woman in the green rolling her eyes at Secretary McMahon's testimony to the Appropriations Committee is basically all of us educator's mood right now at the nonsense that she's spewing in this hearing. They want to dismantle the education system and your children's future.

Make no mistake, these detentions and deportations are purposefully designed to punish dissenting voices. This is what authoritarian regimes do and it should be a red flag to everyone.

This administration and ICE are ignoring court orders and snatching pro-Palestinian protestors off the street to effectively deport them for their political views. THIS IS NOT NORMAL. THIS IS NOT DEMOCRATIC BEHAVIOR.

The double standard in American politics right now is that the violent response to an election outcome is considered "patriotic" and worthy of pardons, but the sharp response to people effectively losing their jobs, healthcare, and livelihood is considered "derangement."
