We can't "save the Democratic party'" if we don't save democracy and restore our Constitutional protections. "Willingness to disrupt the existing coalition" is pointless if we don't have the will to keep our republic...which we have lost.

This would be because the Federal government is currently run by a post-Constitutional regime. Executive has seceded from the Union. Majority in Congress has as well...and the Supreme Court. We'll have to turn to blue States to honor Constitutional protections.
