A brilliant vintage 1950s 60s handmade copper enamel Mexican modernist pre-Columbian Aztec Mayan Figure design wall-hanging bowl artwork. Entirely handmade hand wrought in hand wrought solid copper with hand-hammered and incised design centering a vividly colored pre Columbian figure likely based on an Aztec or Mayan original. The copper bowl has been given a rippled edge that looks irregular in my photos, but is original not damage, and looks fine in person. Measures 10" diameter by about 1" high at rim. Unmarked, and obviously the work of a talented designer, craftsman, and enamelist! Quality finishes with ring at back for hanging and another lower ring so that the artwork hangs flat agains the wall. The copper has been given a clear coating to prevent tarnish both front and back, and there is applied oxidation (patination) in the center section surrounding the enamelwork which makes the colors of the enamel stand out even more! Excellent vintage condition.

An antique circa 1920 Egyptian Revival handmade enamel on gold-plated brass link bracelet most likely of European origin. Five panels of brilliantly colored enameled Egyptian scenes against a white enamel background! Each a work of fine art to wear on the wrist! Tut-mania swept the world in the 1920s after the discovery of the intact tomb of boy-king Tutankhamun! This fascination with ancient Egyptian culture and art translated into every conceivable form to quench the thirst of the avid public! This is one of the finer products from that period not of precious materials. Measures 7.75" wearable length by 3/4" wide. Unmarked. Excellent antique condition.

Japanese wood and lacquer kendai (lectern) with taka-maki-e decoration of an eagle about to take flight - Meiji era (1868-1912).

#Japan #lacquer #wood #kendai #lectern #readingdesk #takamakielacquer #eagle #meijiera #handmade #japaneseart #japanesecraft #antique #japaneselacquer
A lectern (kendai, or reading desk) made of wood and lacquer with a drawer at the base. Takamaki-e decoration depicts an eagle on a rocky promontory, surrounded by vegetation. With its head down and wings half-spread, it is preparing to take flight, perhaps to hunt its prey.
The eagle is considered the king of birds. Its tail feathers are reputed to be the best feathers for an arrow. It is said that these were presented to the Imperial Court and to the Ise Shrine (Mie Prefecture), one of the holiest places in Shintoism.
The kendai is a reading aid for books, poems, or musical scores. Its existence has been documented since the Nara period (710-794).

Miguel Pineda is the most important enamelist in Mexico in the mid 20th century - here's one of his elaborate cloisonné enamel interpretations of ancient Mesoamerican (Mayan) art - measures 14.75" tall by 7.75" wide!

A spectacular vintage 1960s 70s handmade cloisonné enamel on gilt bronze laid down on wood Mexican modernist Mayan King design artwork by the famed artist/enamelist/jewelry designer, Miguel Pineda. This is a Mexican modernist version of an original pre-Columbian artwork of a Mayan King shown triumphant with his foot on the back of one of his defeated enemies and with great splendor of decoration of his garment and headgear. Miguel Pineda did an excellent job of translating the ancient art to the medium of cloisonné enamel gilt bronze that is laid down on a wood base equipped with a hanging device at back.
This enamel artwork measures 14.75" tall by 7.75" wide by about 1" thick, and weighs about 4 pounds prior to packing. Marked at back as shown, "Miguel Pineda" on an inset enameled plaque. Excellent vintage condition.

Griffin buckle
gold
First century BCE
Greece

#ancientgreece #greekbuckle #griffinbuckle #handmade #ancientcraft #repoussage #etched #guardian #houndsofzeus #mythology #religion #greekreligion #greekmythology #goldbuckle #ancientgoldjewelry #jewelrydesign
This first-century BCE Greek buckle shows a griffin, first worked in repoussé and then engraved, with a slot and knob to fasten the belt.
It was worn by someone living or visiting an ancient Greek colony called Pontic Olbia, which was founded in the 7th century BCE on the banks of the Bug River estuary in present-day
Ukraine.
In ancient Greece, a griffin was a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, symbolizing strength, majesty, and guardianship. They were depicted as fierce protectors of treasure, particularly gold, and were said to be in constant conflict with the Arimaspians, a one-eyed race who sought to steal the treasure. Griffins were also associated with the gods, with some myths claiming they pulled the chariot of Apollo or acted as the "Hounds of Zeus".

Alexander Calder: São Paulo, 1955

oil on plywood | 48" × 53 1⁄2"

©2025 Calder Foundation, New York

Further description in the alt text 👇
Calder painted it on the back of a plywood sheet that he used to transport a mobile for his solo show at the 1953 São Paulo Bienal.

The painting features visible holes from where the mobile was lashed down for shipping, and the work is now held at Calder Gardens. This piece exemplifies Calder's practice of using recycled and found materials in his art.

The original purpose:
The plywood was a practical element for transporting a mobile sculpture to the 1953 São Paulo Bienal.

The material:
Calder incorporated this "discarded" material into his art, a common practice for him, as seen in the painting São Paulo.

The visible history:
The holes in the plywood, used to secure the mobile for transport, are still visible on the finished painting.

The current location:
São Paulo is currently on view at Calder Gardens.

The significance:
This story highlights Calder's resourceful and creative approach, where a functional, discarded object was transformed into a work of art.
