VOTE for lower power bills and cheaper clean energy on NOV 4th - early voting Oct 14-31.

Why should us EMC customers care? Because Georgia Power’s reach hits our bills. Georgia Power supplies power & infrastructure to many EMCs. When the PSC approves costly projects, like new power plants or transmission lines, those costs trickle down—right to your EMC bill.

Here's why: the PSC is supposed to keep the Georgia Power monopoly in check by keeping rates reasonable and making sure they work in the PUBLIC's interest ... NOT their shareholders. Bottom line: the current PSC is really, REALLY bad at this job!

Anybody else tired of rising power bills?!?

Good news: we can DO something about this by voting OUT the 2 incumbents in the upcoming Public Service Commission election on Nov. 4th.

discussing how things are going in Georgia. They did a fantastic job laying out the history of and challenges in Georgia with Georgia Power.

Yesterday the Atlanta Press Club held a debate and only Peter J. Hubbard showed up. I guess Commissioner Fitz Johnson was scared to debate him. See image for his statement.

into rates, raising rates 25% for just 1,120 megawatts of nuclear power, about 10 times the cost of alternative sources. And THAT resulted in Bill Shock and now Georgia Power customers are mad about their car payment sized bills.

Things are heating up in Georgia. Just 26 days left to the Georgia Public Service Commission election where Commissioner Tim Echols @timechols.bsky.social and Fitz Johnson will lose their seats, I mean, face voters for the first time since voting to put almost all the cost overruns for Vogtle

Trump’s openly talking about invoking the Insurrection Act with zero insurrection in sight. He’s inventing chaos in Portland and Chicago, and even saying he’d use it if courts or local officials are ‘holding us up’.

Wild how he didn’t bother using it during the actual insurrection on January 6.

An important point made by the Cato Institute's Stephen Thomas regarding the current talk of a nuclear renaissance...

The enormous opportunity cost of wasting our time and resources on nuclear while there are faster, cheaper alternatives readily available. 👇

Could Southern Nuclear be any more tone deaf? Disrespectful? Georgia Power customers are struggling with car payment sized electricity bills after a 25% rate increase May 2024 to pay for a piddly 1,120 MWs of nuclear power generation after years of being told it would cost 2-3%.

Rather remarkable that the Trump administration response to a government shutdown is "let's inflict as much pain as possible on as many Americans as possible"

I know we're desensitized, but it's important to note, again, that today's events would have led to the immediate impeachment & removal of any president from at least Truman to at least Obama. We're hundreds of miles on the interstate past Richard Nixon's high school prank-level crimes compared to 👇

Trump wraps up a speech to military leaders that represented a major escalation of his effort to weaponize the armed forces into a tool he can use to violently quash domestic dissent. Hard to imagine how anyone with a shred of dignity can keep serving after this, which of course is the point.

Republicans don’t like anyone knowing they’re screwing over the stable climate we rely on to live our lives so have ended data collection on carbon emissions to hide the truth of their fossil fuel addiction. I’d say it’s unbelievable but it’s just another day in the office for them.

Amory Lovins is right, it's absolutely absurd to believe nuclear power will meet the needs of AI data centers.

☀ + Microgrids are the way.

Each year, nuclear adds as much net global capacity as renewables add every two days. Soaring renewables generate three times more global electricity than stagnant nuclear ... China added 197 times more solar and wind than nuclear capacity, at half the cost.

and now that Vogtle has been delivered that ROE should be returned to industry norms. But – no can do! Instead, commissioners locked it in for 3 more years in a Trojan Horse rate freeze in a pretense of helping you, when it actually helps Georgia Power. Vote them out!
pattydurand.bsky.social
Also know that commissioners granted Georgia Power an ROE (a measure of profits) FAR above utility industry norms beginning in 2019 to stabilize nervous financial markets due to Plant Vogtle’s extreme cost overruns and schedule delays,

while we’re already paying a 25% surcharge on our electricity bills to pay for the last gas price spikes from the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.* And commissioners allowed Georgia Power to cancel coal plants previously scheduled to retire. Why? All for data centers!
pattydurand.bsky.social
Five commissioners ignored 3,000 Georgians begging, pleading and urging them to accelerate Georgia Power’s clean energy transition to affordable solar and instead approved 10 gigawatts - the equivalent of 10 more Plant Vogtle reactors - of very expensive gas plants,

Is your Georgia Power bill enormous? Are you concerned about climate change? Two of five Public Service Commission seats are up for election on November 4. That is the state agency that determines Georgia Power’s electricity rates and generation mix.
