I make beer for a living and for fun. Middle aged ramblings on beer and domestic nonsense. I also grow stuff and keep chickens. Proud member of the Guardian-reading, tofu-eating Wokerati. With a side order of Huddersfield Town.
Meanwhile, Project Pastrami is gaining momentum #brine

I was in the queue at the Post Office (which also sells booze) just now, and the guy in front of me bought 18 cans of Carling for £16.99. How can this be?!?!? Game’s gone.

Right, I’m off to watch Gardeners World while I come out of my crackling coma.
November 23, 2025 at 5:53 PM
Oh, and we’ve made some more soap to replace the old stuff that I palmed off onto you lot last week. This time, chocolate and orange “flavour”*

*do not eat

It’s a bit early yet, but I reckon the St Bernardus Christmas jumper will be making a first appearance of the festive season next weekend.

Irish coffee to deflect the Sunday Blues.

I’m enjoying planning my next culinary project. Next week I’m collecting a fucking great big dry-aged flat brisket from Yorkshire Craft Butchery which I’m hoping to turn into pastrami in time to make Reuben sandwiches at Christmas.

Mrs S has been successfully collected so I’m having a late cocktail evening. A Metropolitan.
November 22, 2025 at 11:08 PM
Mrs S has her work Xmas do tonight and I’m on taxi duties. This means a drink-free Saturday evening. How ever will I cope 😕

When we were negotiating our walk this morning, the compromise we reached was for a walk of “About six miles over two hours with a couple of hundred meters of elevation”. I think I did ok there.

Longley Wood, Huddersfield. This is only about a mile from the town centre, but feels like the middle of nowhere.

A distant Emley Moor Mast disappearing into the cloud. From Castle Hill, Huddersfield.

I really fancy a brisk twelve mile walk, but Mrs S says she’ll only come with me if I downgrade to a gentle four miler.

I’d appreciate her company though so a compromise has been reached.

After a rather hectic day in which nothing I’m aware of went too badly wrong*, beer is poured and my arse is finally plonked on the sofa.

*then again, there’s still four hours and six minutes of today left so I’d better keep my trap shut

Folk who requested soap last week…

All orders are now made up and ready to go to the Post Office on Monday.

I think everyone who requested one has got something, but if I forget anyone, please do shout.

Otherwise, all stock is now accounted for. Thanks.

I had to go into an actual bank branch today for the first time in donkeys years, and my how things have changed!

No more queuing to stand at a window or pens on chains. Now they have a triage system and comfy chairs before you’re called to stand at a lectern type thing while you do business.

Eh up gang! Lamb rogan josh pie and mash for tea round our gaff tonight #pie

Packaging cask beer and listening to the cricket, this is turning into an unexpectedly pleasant morning.
November 21, 2025 at 9:13 AM
Following Mrs S’ request for a festive brew of Belgian beer, the ingredients arrived today.

The problem is my motivation is at an all time low and I can’t be arsed dusting off the brewery. I’d rather just go for a long sad walk on Saturday.

I’m usually quite happy in my own company, but it feels as if I’ve had rather too much of it lately. Sigh.
November 20, 2025 at 8:13 PM
In other news, I’m in Holmfirth and without wishing to stereotype anyone, it really IS just like being in The Last of the Summer Wine.

The only difference is that it is old people causing chaos by attempting to park at the Co-op instead of hurtling down a hill in a bathtub.

I just went through an AI interrogation in an attempt to get a doctors appointment. What a palaver! I’ve given up and decided to just remain poorly and hope it gets better by itself. What a time to be alive!
