Reading @lavietidhar.bsky.social’s “The Escapement”* and marvelling at both the imagination and command of language. Highly worthwhile!

*I keep reading this as “Escarpment” but that is not the author’s fault!

Because my children are Gen Alpha monsters, they want to know if I've sold 67 copies of Year's Best Canadian F&SF Vol 3 this month--get it? 6-7 * makes flailing juggling motion and despairs * I'm about 20 copies shy. For Black Friday, want to help an indie publisher pull one over on his kids?

Scientists: have you been the target of an online harassment campaign, doxxing, or weaponized FOIA requests? I'd like to talk to you about steps you had to take to protect your digital security for an upcoming Nature story. (You can be anonymous if necessary.)

RTs appreciated.

Nothing to do with calculus, but you should listen to @renanbernardo.com’s nifty “Baron Quits the Payloaders” on @escapepod.org:

Escape Pod 1019: Baron Quits The Payloaders
This story starts with a gig. Half a million people from all corners of the galaxy, hands in the air, heads banging to our vibrant noise. You probably saw the venue on some feed already.

In self-interest but also general interest, folks: Black Friday is coming up, and small publishers/independent creators will always be a better choice than megacorps.

When the sales drop, please remember that!

Jealous of Guelph and KW types and your new weekend commuter trains to Toronto. The London choice between a 3-hour each way bus trip, a $100 Via trip, or driving the highway from Hades … is not a great choice.

And so good to know that the high speed rail won’t reach us either.

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

WE DO NOT THINK SATELLITE CONSTELLATIONS ARE FINE
In one of my astrophoto groups, a guy posted a photo that shows some non-celestial stuff in it and someone said it’s satellite constellations and another person said that astronomers really hate those and several men have weighed in to say actually astronomers think they’re fine

Me: WE DO NOT
