I think it depends how much of a risk the creator is at for someone stealing the handle.

Mine was taken very quickly from the beginning, and I had no option to claim it myself; where I would have probably preferred it left alone.
I feel mine wasn't at much risk, but who knows aye.

The biggest problem is when people taking those handles also take all the branding assets and make the account look like said person. Emails won't be exchanged to control the account; only the handle, so in general it's been pretty sketch.
