I've been thinking this would be a good idea for a while now - either ring-fencing the GST for local content and news or imposing a specific levy. After all, we can't really go back to a tv license system now and the funding model established after it was abolished can't keep up. #nzpol

Gee, it would kind of help if our government was made up of thoughtful and serious people rather than the clown show we currently are stuck with. Given we're faced with the likely collapse of NATO and the global reverberations every corner of the world faces.

I don't casually drop the F word, but if you're not convinced the US is now fully a fascist state given the events of the last day, I think you're delusional.

Pour one out for my fellow designated family tech nerds. I guess we're all going to handhold relatives through some personal cybersecurity self-audits over the coming weeks.

It's a long way from setting the clock on the VCR.

Finally Dunedin had a clear night recently and I could spend a couple of hours imaging the Sculptor Pinwheel Galaxy. This little smudge is 6 million light years away.

So this is part of a programme of work that began in December 2024 and planned for nearly 100 days without services until the end of January next year. The article below from a year ago outlined the schedule. But still, what a shit show.

It's very likely we already have Tempora-style mass data collection in place given the narrow chokepoints our submarine cables have on communications. But watch out for efforts against encryption such as chat control, digital IDs and outlawing VPNs beyond age-gating social media in 2026.

When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.
