No more regional councils - major shake-up of local government announced
The government says it is not a power grab, but about "making local government fit for purpose".

This is a power grab. Shane Jones wants to reduce any hurdles - such as regional councils rejecting resource consents - to mining.

Don't let them take our democratic rights away without any opposition.

(Chants) "Spill. Spill. Spill. Spill."

Maybe I can will it into existence.

Note he claimed he's going to be PM into next year, not into the election, in particular.

I think he'll be gone by June with the promise of a knighthood to soften the blow

Congratulations and good luck @clrenney.bsky.social

I see @chewienz.bsky.social is getting his pieces in place for his eventual power grab.

I gave some thought to the prospect of a social media ban for under 16s in NZ and have decided I'm against it for civil liberties and privacy reasons.

Regarding Peters and the Regulatory Standards Act, while I agree with him, I wonder if NZF went through the "agree to disagree" process in the coalition agreement, as required by the Cabinet Manual.

Somebody should ask him. (Looks pointedly at the media) #nzpol

Think of everything that has happened since 1994: the Asian economic crisis, the dotcom bubble, 9/11, the global financial crisis and the covid pandemic.

The biggest economic crisis NZ has faced in all that time is the doctrinaire clownshow of Willis, Luxon, Seymour and Peters.

A few photos from the protest against Luxon at the rear entrance to the Art Gallery in Dunedin this morning. I'd say about 15-20 were there, although there were more people at the main entrance.

Right wing governments love nothing more than to plunder the commons and engage in short-term thinking. Especially when it comes to natural monopolies. This must be resisted.
