their goal is to reach the tree and eliminate the problem it causes it's corruption. The point is that in order to cure the corruption, Nightmare has to absorb the negativity that exists in the Aus.

(context no one asked) The story takes place during an apocalypse where the tree is causing corruption in different Aus, something like a zombie apocalypse. Dream and Nightmare were created to be able to cure the affected people and Aus.
