I played like 300 hours of og PSO2 between the jp and global servers. I had fun but I can't say I'd recommend it lmao. The gacha really got its claws into it. It was refreshing going back to PSU on a private server and being like "oh right, I can just buy cosmetics with ingame currency in this"

It's worth a shot then, both the offline campaigns and online on a private server! Honestly the last time Phantasy Star was truly worth playing online imo

I actually love the PSU games a lot. The first and Ambition of the Illuminus were some of the most fun I've had playing an online rpg ever. But without the big community aspect it won't hit as hard imo. I'd recommend the psp versions (specifically 2 Infinity) instead
