Well the etymology of cul de sac shows that it was originally used to describe a blind diverticulum, and they're not that big, hahahahaaa 🤣

I've read it in the figurative sense of a situation that is hard/impossible to escape from in sentences like "backing oneself into a cul de sac". Probably a BE thing?

It's not a preferable translation if it's obscure or if in AE it only refers to an actual road that is closed on one end...

Uhm not unheard of in a figurative usage on this side of town, but it carries none of the gravitas of being at a dead end and it doesn't work very well in the context of his elucubrations on the weight of those words.
