It's that time of year again...

From now until the Autumnal Equinox on Sep 22, regions in Northern Canada witness a significant decrease in daylight, with up to 5 to 11 hours lost. Similarly, areas around the mid-latitudes in the United States experience a reduction of 2 to 3 hours of sunlight

Recently, I create a web app (using ACIS 1994-2024 climatological data) for every county across New England, looking specifically at when the earliest/early/median/late/latest first Fall "Chill", frost, hard freeze & first (Winter) measurable snowfall occur.

Very cool overnight progged across central and northern New England as dry air mass continues filtering into the region. For many locations across the interior, min temps in the upper 30s to mid 40s will fall into the 5th-10th percentile for earliest/early temps ≤45°F.

Significantly cooler and drier air has moved in across New England on the heels of a 1029 hPa dome of high pressure centered over Ontario/Quebec, CA. Today's air mass was located over Hudson Bay just two days ago.

Over the weekend, I got curious about how the arrival of Fall varies across New England. When does the first real "chill" hit Coös County versus the Cape Cod?,

So I decided to turn that curiosity into a new interactive map.

Got to visit the NCWCP (NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction) in Maryland earlier this month. So proud of the work that I'm doing for the NWS.

It was a chilly one across New England yesterday. Many locations were at or below 40°F for more than 12 hours.
