I don't want to be here. It's another company that controls a platform that can ruin things at any time. Find me on Mastodon at [email protected] where I believe in the platform, consider joining me!

That said, I'm feeling the network effect, so here I am again 👋

I was planning on putting away the changing table topper soon because we're long past the diaper stage, but Zara the cat has other plans. It's her bed now.

I am a child of the 80s, and my eldest son, well, it has rubbed off.

Two of the first prints he asked for on our 3D printer were things from Tron and Knight Rider 😍

KITT (altered to print multicolor): www.printables.com/model/486634...

I finally got a laptop dock for my desk so I don't need to plug/unplug HDMI and USB-C all the time.

Why didn't I do this sooner? Why was I doing this to myself? 😂

I just published the January report for open source software packages for Linux on #IBMZ and #LinuxONE 🐧

The team tested nearly two dozen projects, including doxygen, Elastic Logstash, and PHP 🥳

Kiddo started T-ball today, the era of bringing kids to sports has begun! ⚾

This is my first time having a cat we didn't name (Zara had a family before us, so that name was pretty firmed up!)

But it's probably for the best. I named the last cat we had Caligula 😅

Never made it to the Silicon Valley Micro Center until today. It's cool, big into 3d printers.

Bought several spools of filament, but sadly their filament machine was broken so it was a real hunt to find what we were looking for!

Zara the cat is finally cone-free! 🎉

After adopting her at the end of August we discovered she came to us with a wound on her back foot, and her tail. Her tail wound took AGES to heal, and a lot of specialized treatment, but we finally got the all clear from the vet today.

This 3D printer design for a Mignon 4 #typewriter popped up around the time we were setting up our 3D printer a few weeks ago.

This article made me even more excited! Soon.

A month away from #scale23x in Pasadena, CA! 🐧🎉

Flying down on Wednesday, and on Saturday I'm giving a talk on "Open Source in Closed Ecosystems" where I talk about my experience with growing open source communities in the mainframe space.

See you there? 😁

I love meeting with college students, but somehow they make me feel young (they have my level of youthful enthusiasm for tech) but also, not young 😂

Why yes, I did start my career before you were born.

Yesterday I swung by the IBM office in San Francisco, and today I went with the opposite experience, driving down to the IBM Silicon Valley Lab nestled in "the cow part of San Jose" (alas, no cows in this picture, but they are around sometimes!)

I can see BART trains from our family room in the 'burbs, but I do miss living downtown and seeing these beautiful vintage streetcars every day

Wandered up to San Francisco today for a little bit of this and that, including meeting a local IBM Z Student Ambassador for lunch!

So much geeky conversation was had. Mainframes old and new, skills, working across architectures and operating systems. I need to do this more often.

We released version 1.2 of our GitHub Actions service for IBM Z and Power 🎉 including improvements to Python support, so you can now use the IBM fork (until it's accepted upstream) of python-versions to specify versions: community.ibm.com/community/us...

I'm sure it's fine, and going to work in a skyscraper in San Francisco today is the right move.

Took our kiddo to a pediatric dentist (instead of our family one) and they have TVs hanging from the ceiling so the kids can watch cartoons during the exam.

Kinda jealous. I want to watch Moana during my teeth cleaning.

The title slays me 💀

"IBM says AI is insane in the mainframe as z17 sales surge"

www.theregister.com/2026/01/29/i...

But the IBM Spyre AIU for the IBM z17 is pretty spectacular.

And yes, I got to hold one at IBM TechXchange in October. You should know me by now! 😁

There are 25 kids in my son's class, which means I need to buy two dozen plus 1 cupcake.

I think that means I need to buy 2.5 dozen and eat 5 cupcakes myself 😋 🧁

NO JUDGEY.

If you forgot what it felt like in the spring of 2020, listen to a podcast from that time.

I've been catching up on some older episodes of "Historical Blindness" and though he's focused on the topics and doesn't dwell on it, the vibe is like an audio time capsule!

I love how the answer to the title of this article is "they don't"

"Why Costco Still Relies On IBM Computers From The '80s"

www.bgr.com/2079471/why-...

The new Power 11 servers are so shiny ✨ I was able to meet my first one at IBM TechXchange 2025 back in October.

(I work on IBM Z, not Power)
Why Costco Still Relies On IBM Computers From The '80s - BGR
Costco still uses old IBM computers. This is because these systems are more secure, backwards compatible, and reliable, making them less of a hassle.

Our 7 year old watches Knight Rider. This evening:

"Hey mom, did people used to have newspapers because they didn't have phones and tablets to tell them the news so they had to read it on paper?"

"...yes."

🤯

Our 5 year old believes we bought a 3D printer just so that we could print this Toothless figure that he's been requesting for MONTHS (we saw one in person at a shop over the summer).

It IS a pretty cool print.
