Evany Turk reminds us to ensure that rehabilitation & assisted living facilities are doing right by older people living with HIV.

Sometimes facilities hold onto our community members even when they're ready to go because they are making money off of their benefits.

Tomorrow is National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. For people living w #HIV, these awareness days are an opportunity to tell folks to do their part to protect themselves from the virus -- just as we saved millions of people from HIV with our advocacy when no one else was coming to save us.

People Living With HIV Need:

Folks who love people living with HIV enough NOT to believe every bad thing they hear about us.

We’re people first; just like you.

Trump & Republican legislators are still trying to cut #HIV funding from the 2026 budget. If we stop them now, they won't get away with it!

The Reunion Project has come up with this list of actions you can take to fight back & help #SaveHIVFunding.

Silence Equals Death. Let's make some noise!

The HIV Caucus is for EVERYONE who believes in empowering people living with HIV & containing the epidemic. Even if you're not living with HIV.

People who aren't living with HIV can join as supporters by filling out this membership form:

1. Using your experience to help people re-frame their language sometimes helps get them through the door.

2. You may not be the proper messenger; try pairing them w someone from the community who they can understand.

3. If no one around you is available, extend your search.

When talking about safer sex campaigns, please include condoms ― because pills are not for everyone.

And once again, we see that there is a dearth of research on the effects of HRT (testosterone) and ART on the health of trans men living with HIV.

We talk about race a lot here. But when we talk about "whiteness," we're not necessarily talking about people ― we're talking about a system. And if that bothers you, ask yourself why. I'm not apologizing about it, I'm just telling you what it is and why.

Incredible Tori Cooper speaking on race.

When working with younger trans-women, don't center everything around a panel. Try being in community, hanging out w them. Showing up in your uniform makes it clear that you're in 1 place & you're in another.

"It can't be just be, 'How are you doing? Here's some PrEP.' And leave."

Older people with HIV and older LGBTQ+ people are more likely to need to live in assisted living facilities because of stigma, lack of children, or no family support. It's why a Long-term Care Bill of Rights is essential.

Everyone needs accommodations, whether they are disabled or not.

But when people with disabilities ask for them, they are made to seem like they are lazy, unreasonable, or too expensive to engage.

People w HIV are 2-4 times more likely to develop long-COVID, which is repeatedly dismissed as a symptom of aging.

Compared to their counterparts, people w HIV & other disabilities report:

33% higher rates of HIV stigma
22.8% higher rates of depression
19.6% higher rates of anxiety

Prevalence of chronic pain among people w HIV is 40-80%. Chronic pain is exhausting.

Chronic fatigue is 1 of the most common features of HIV.

"When they tell you that it's unexplainable fatigue, that forecloses any possibility that they will find a solution or invest in one."

Gabriel San Emeterio brilliantly breaks down the able-bodied to nondisabled binary around disability.

As a person who has been living with HIV for over 20 years, I appreciate every one of you for being here. Are people living with #HIV weak? No! That's why we're here.

This quilt isn't in memoriam. It's a warning about what will happen if these cuts come to pass. Cutting HIV funding and Medicaid will kill.

This morning, the HIV Caucus attended the #SaveHIVFunding action on the National Lawn.

As we closed the action, we joined to chant, "Kill the Cuts!" ― as in, kill the Medicaid cuts and attempts to eliminate #HIV funding.

One panelist shared:

"I don't like to disclose a lot because people are always looking for something to talk about. I want to be known for the work that I do as a researcher or capacity builder. I'm not shy or embarrassed about my status, but why should that be your business to share?"
plhivcaucus.bsky.social
Alora said she was always out with her status to the point that if you Google her first name, you get her entire life and health story. She says she didn't think about the reality that prospective employers heard her story before they met her.
