Our thoughts are with the two National Guardsmen shot in DC today and with their families. No one should face harm for simply doing their job. But more troops on DC streets isn’t the answer. This tragedy demands care, not escalation.

POGO's statement: www.pogo.org/post/deployi...
Deploying More Troops to D.C. Won’t Make Servicemembers or Residents…
We are sending thoughts to the National Guardsmen shot today in D.C. in an act of senseless violence, while also pushing back on the announcement to deploy 500 more National Guard troops to the city.

Threatening a sitting politician with legal action for simply stating the law reeks of authoritarianism. This is a dangerous new step in the politicization of the Dept of Defense.

There is no nuance to a service member's oath — if any service member receives an order that is unlawful, they must refuse to execute it.

Defense contractors are trying to remove right-to-repair provisions from the Pentagon’s policy bill. It would be unacceptable for Congress to put CEO profits over the safety of military personnel.

Email your reps & tell them to back strong right-to-repair provisions: https://bit.ly/48yOXGz

NEW FROM THE POGO INVESTIGATIONS DESK:

In June, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem issued a directive requiring her sign-off on any department obligations above $100,000. Since then, several contract awards have seemingly skirted that obstacle.

Secretary Noem requiring her sign-off on spending above $100,000 has reportedly created backlogs of DHS contract awards. Some awards appear to skirt her review.

We're glad that the Coast Guard has walked this reprehensible change back, even though we're deeply disturbed that it ever happened in the first place. Symbols of hate are just that, and there is no grey area or room for debate.
This is deeply disturbing. Swastikas and nooses are clear symbols of hate and shouldn't be tolerated anywhere-- let alone in our nation's military. This isn't up for debate.

Congress needs to talk to Coast Guard leadership & get to the bottom of this.
U.S. Coast Guard will no longer classify swastikas, nooses as hate symbols
The military service, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, has drafted a new policy that classifies such items “potentially divisive.”

The ability to disagree, free from the fear of violence, is a bedrock principle of this country.

When the highest office in the country calls for political violence against lawmakers, it undermines every American’s right to safety, security, and free speech.

"There's a pretty common theme that deploying the military into U.S. cities is not something that can be done lawlessly. It is a good sign that the courts are standing up and saying that." -POGO's David Janovsky
Trump's National Guard deployments face mounting legal pushback
President Trump's efforts to send National Guard troops to U.S. cities have been repeatedly met with resistance in the courts — most recently, in Tennessee.
